The Gale Force 9 Firefly game is really good, not sure if that's the one you picked up...

My wife is very involved in my hobby life but does not play. She buys me models, gives me time to go play with my toy soldiers, and criticizes my painting. That's been a pretty good deal so far.

Deadzone by Mantic sounds very nice for it.

The game have just been released, have a "hard sci-fi" feeling (star trekk, firefly, AVP universe), and the rules are very nice (the use of a square board make things easier for newcomers to the hobby).

It is intended to be a "casual game", but have a very nice collecting point building up, and is cheap.

A lot of hoobysts are describing it as "wargame meet boardgame", as it is easy to learn and play, but have nice tactical stuff to be taken in point.

Also, the universe still have a very shallow fluff, newcomers and casual players will not feel lost in it.

Just my cents...

If my post show some BAD spelling issues, please forgive-me, english is not my natural language, and i never received formal education on it...

Ah-ha! Firefly. Well there you go. Gangfight Stidios (the Blackwater Gulch guys) are producing a set of Serenity crew inspired models. There's also other not-Firefly models on the market, should the interest arise one day.

Ok, maybe not, but it's the only non-GW wargame I've tried. It's pretty awesome. More realistically though, take her to see the Hobbit in a few weeks and then ask if she's interested in the game. LOTR was my gateway drug into buying a Tyranid codex.

It's all well and good to enjoy a hobby with your significant other, but remember that you both need your own hobbies as well.

Oh yes, nothing helps you get your painting on like the wife going to play mahjong with her friends or sitting down to work on her own crafts.

Super Dungeon Explore seems quite popular with the wives and girlfriends. But I haven't played it or tried to get my wife to play so I couldn't say from personal experience.

The miniature board game route seems like quite a good gateway to a bigger war gaming universe for the uninitiated.

Actually my gf didn't like SDE. Even though the models are cute, the rules can get quite involved, especially when you start laying down status effects and stuff. She found it slow and annoying. Though I'm sure it gets faster once you have all the rules down, but it never got that chance.

Zombicide has proven very popular. Everyone I've played it with has wanted to play again (I don't think liking zombies is a prerequisite). Being co-op really helps, as no one ever feels like they're not good at the game and gives up. Plus you get about 70 miniatures in the box, so there is plenty to practice painting on. You should get Zombicide... If not for her, just get it for yourself man, it's awesome

Yeah it's very hard not to like Zombicide IMHO. I've run it a few time at the club I attend and quickly picked up a people that wanted to play. Easy to learn at the table and immense fun, there's no reason for either gender to not like it.

In the same bracket, a little more complex and infinitely open for change to whatever genre you want (or girlfriend likes) is 7TV. It's well suited to lighthearted games mostly it covers Pulp but also SciFi, the Action System allows for involvement in each others turn.

I've played the demo games at the last two Salute so maybe swayed by their many beautiful tables and minis but it strikes me as something that could be somewhere to go once your girlfriend has caught the bug.

Playing their ZTV (zombie) spin off using a Not-Scoobydoo gang against a board of undead was immense fun and I would imagine (from the number of ladies that were also involved with the demo) that the system may appeal to females more than a "war" game.

If she's interested in getting into wargameing with you, just ask her what kinda modles she would like to paint/play with and try to find a good game from their. (Starting with the broad topics of Sci-fi, fantasy, historical, ect) then narrowing it down from there.

But what I realy want to add is never try to "sell" your significant other on wargameing. This is a time consumeing hobby to force on someone. I've seen some guys bassicly turn wargameing night into a chore for their girlfriends. It's good share hobbies, but it's also ok to have separate ones also. Sadly i've seen it enough that seeing questions like this now makes me cringe at remembering the awkwardness that can result. =S

Would she even like wargaming? My wife, I've never tried to get into any part of it. She listens to me talk about stuff. Gives me time to paint…play if I want to. She even entertains me when I show her a pic of an awesome painted mini. Gaming? Nope. Not going to happen. It's worth a shot if your GF is into geek culture, but if not, I'm of the opinion of let sleeping dogs lie.

I've been through this my my own girlfriend and board games is the way to go.
Start with something with a bit of comedy to it like Munchkin or Zombies!!!. If she enjoys them move up to board games with more model orientated play like zombicide or dreadball.
The one that did it for my girlfriend is Malifaux, she liked the look of some of the models (the dreamer crew with teddy) and has been itching to try the game since i brought some for her. We now have a demo game with a local henchman next weekend.
A lot of it is going to come down to personnal taste, finding a game that has models that appeal visually and gameplay that she enjoys may take a while. Try a gaming show such as salute, where you can play lots of different demo's together.
Just don't be too pushy about it, while i believe there's a gamer in all of us trying to force her to play games will just put her off.
