A rifle with a “selective fire” switch, allowing the weapon to fire a single bullet or a burst of bullets, like a sub machine gun, but it uses rifle ammunition.

first thing that comes to mind is:

here comes the brady bunch with another round of fear mongering dis-information.

first gun that comes to mind, the BAR!

how has no one mentioned this yet! its the BEST assault rifle ever... last one that was truely a "rifle" IMO too... I see the m16 usually used in carbine length more then a rifle.

edit to add

yes i know 30-06 isnt "intermediate" to most of you recoil wusses...

your loss!

BAR is NOT an assault rifle, it was closer to a light machine gun.

Really though....wouldnt anything used in an assault be an assault weapon? If I were to attack a random passerby with a pocket knife.....suddenly Im using an assault weapon.

So what's the proper technical term for a select fire rifle that fires an intermediate round?

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Lol no, 75 AK-47s worldwide is not rare by any measure of the word. The M-16 is only at 8 million, even the world famous Thompson is only about 2.7 million. Please at least attempt research before posting.

OT: I think the classic AK-47 on first sight.

M4/M16 family of guns is the first thing that popped into my head. Followed by Russian kalashnikovs, and then the StG 44 - the first ever assault rifle.

I think we can all agree that assault guns are much cooler than assault rifles.

I think an Assault Rifle is a gun that has the capability of firing a lot of bullets while being held in two hands. I'm not a really avid gun person so there you go.

I never really associated the M16(AR15) as assault rifles because you don't use them "in an assault". I imagine you'd use SBRs, SMGs or ACRs in an assault.

Unless of course you are issued an M16, in which case you damned well use it in an assault.

Including a M240B, SAW (M249), maybe someone being funny and using a 9mm not in a building, some frag's, maybe a smoke, lot's of harsh language, verbal commands, physical sign language, and a couple thrown rock's...one time a chicken.... a goat...mind you we have a grill at the FoB....

Individual weapon designed to engage targets in a variety of situations.

With some more thought; I would stipulate the ability to engage point targets at 300m, select fire, durable, easy to handle, as light weight as possible, box magazine.

In my experience you don't throw away your M16 and go to the armoury to pick up an SMG when you contact an enemy position that you have to take. The act of assaulting a position being to push onto it, clear and secure the area of threats. This can be anything from a building to an enemy patrol in the bush (read forest) to a machine gun position in an open area.

Try and answer fast and quick before you have a chance to self censor.

If you want to provide more explanation after your answer, that's fine too, but first just get it out there.

Any answer is fine, could be a certain weapon, a definition of a class of weapon, a legal case, a news item, a gut reaction, a personal experience, etc, etc whatever.
I'll offer mine in a bit, but I'm curious what folks thoughts are for this term before I have a chance to muddy the waters with my own thoughts.
