Always wondered, what's the typical army actual Veterans go for?

Well deldar is usually the army designed for veterans (even more so before the update) since they are widely accepted as one of the hardest armies to play in 40k and require alot of finesse to use effectivley both in the list making stage and in the gameplay stage. But it does seem like the new nids will now be the hardest army to play since they now have a pseudo phase out rule like oldcrons had

Except since the inception of the 5th Ed Codex that has been a myth, so long as you've got a handful of braincells and can deduce that not taking dumb pick and mix selections is the way to go, its easy to leverage more easy to apply, brute force killing power than most other Codexes. Sure, a newbie is more likely to be decimated if the enemy fire first, but isn't that always the case with every army with newbies?

Now when we look at the Black Templars and Orks, a newbie will have a very hard time winning with them, and basically auto-lose against many mid-level Taudar/Tau/Eldar lists exploiting some of the more broken units you have to consider. IG without exploiting either Vendettas or your big guns in heavy support is very difficult for newbies though that may soon change slightly, Daemons I've heard are hard to get the gist of because of luck and randomness and given what I know of the Codex that sounds likely.

I started playing Dawn of War with some friends as an alternitive to other games, something for a change of pace. I liked the idea of the game, the units all of it. I didnt realize it was an actual game until just before 6th ed came out when my buddy and I went looking for something that could keep us entertained while we were....otherwise inebrated. We walked into the FLGS and saw AoBR. We asked whet it was and was shown a game in progress between a Marine of some type and IG. It was then that the connection between DoW and 40k clicked. We proceeded to buy the Ork and SM codex, 2 AoBR starters a Chaplain on Bike and a squad of Lootas all at once. We split the orks and marines from both sets so we each had double the amount and off I went....4300 points of marines, 1200 poins of necrons and 2000 points of orks later..

Its a game, have fun. If you arent for some reason...find a new one.

When I was much younger, I liked to make wargame-ish things (basically drawing faces on small slips of paper and calling them soldiers) and sending them against each other. A friend showed me Axis and Allies where I got my first taste of wargaming (and was anihilated every game). Then one day, he showed me 40k. He gave an overview of the different armies and I chose the Spess Mehreens.

Esteemed Veteran Space Marine

My secret fortress at the base of the volcano!

In very early 1994, I accompanied a friend of mine to the local comic book store (we didn't have a FLGS in my town back then) and I saw him picking up an issue of White Dwarf. I paged thru it on the ride home and started asking questions and making a general nuisance of myself. I don't remember the issue, but the "new" carnifex model was featured prominantly. Later that year, the comic shop moved to a bigger location and had room to stock gaming stuff, as opposed to just magazines and... well, comics.

I started piecing together a Space Marine army a little at a time (mostly because it cost the least to assemble a 2000pt army, compared to IG or anything). By 1995, I had enough models to actually play a game (which is why I consider '95 the year I started 40K, as opposed to '94... it's just a phase until you put models on a table and roll some dice, then its a commitment) and the 40K scene was just exploding in my town, as the comic store had added 8' x 4' tables for people to play on. Most of my friends had armies, and even the odd guy who wasn't into 40K did get into Blood Bowl and Necromunda.

Fortunately for my bank account, I managed to avoid the taint of WHFB and stick to 40K and Necromunda...

...Until they released a box set with Brettonians. Arthurian knights? Sign me up!

Which is weird, considering that twenty years later, I STILL haven't finished assembling that first Brettonian army (despite having two complete WHFB armies, now).

I was like "What the.... They have ROBOTECH? You can play ROBOTECH in this game? BAD ASS". I love love love the old series.

I have good news for you (possibly bad news for your wallet) ... they just released an actual, official Robotech tabletop miniatures game. They've only got Macross stuff so far, but I'm told they are looking into the other series as well.

When I was 12, some guy brought a little pamphlet thing with space marines in a load of different colour schemes in to school. 3rd edition had just dropped, and I was intrigued by these little space-knights. Who were there? What were the differences between the different colours, what was their story. So I dived into the fluff, got myself a small, awfully painted and poorly listed blood angels army and never looked back. It's still the fluff that keeps me in the game to this day.

Back in the late 80s/early 90s when Fantasy was king. Brother had a small force of RTB01 marines painted up as Rainbow Warriors [still plan to do a Rainbow Warriors army at some point in the future]. Then Space Crusade, Space Hulk, big gap [12 years?] of no gaming but reading books, and buying WD. Then WoW, and used 40k as WoW substitute. Now massively hooked and gaming regularly.

I like humans with big shooty guns. Imperial Guard (and Necromunda) was the obvious choice.

I built a few Orks (for GorkaMorka) and a squad of Space Marines for a change, but they didn't charge my battery; they just don't have the customising potential. But that's just my opinion.

well, i started with dawn of war, thinking that it was only a PC game (i found it young) and lived on like that for quite a while. then one night i found my friend's brother's necron army and he taught me how to play, and i loved it ever since

I'll never be able to repay CA for making GW realize that The Old World was a cash cow, left to die in a field.
