I used to drink while 40k'ing it up with friends. Lately we've been playing the 40k RPGs instead, which are a lot more conducive to friendly drinking.
I don't think that everyone drinking really contributed to the demise of 40k in our outside-of-FLGS game crew...I think it was more the competitive nature of the game and the horrific rule set. There were never any specific issues.
A-holes will find ways to be A-holes even when they're dead sober.

IMO drinking and smoking at all is unhealthy. There are literally zero benefits to smoking. Drinking might give you some short term pleasure, but as you age it can really make you fat.
This is an adorable statement. There are tons of things that can make you fat. Good alcohol is a wonderful thing.
Alcohol is just a calorie. If you're still in a caloric deficit or roughly maintenance you shouldn't gain much, if any, fat. Problem is people tend to overeat when drinking.
I balance that out with one meal a day, and then booze the rest.

What kind of title is that, 'Gaming and substance abuse'? It made me imagine a bunch of 40k people shooting heroin or doing magic mushrooms while playing 40k. I guess that's one way to make it more fun.
I'm sure some people drink, but it doesn't seem too common. Coffee or soda is pretty much the only 'substance abuse' I usually see while gaming.

Toxic resin, glue, and paper cuts. It might not sound as bad as heroin, but it'll probably kill me just as quick anyways.

I tend to have a beer or two when I'm playing anything really, whether it be tabletop or electronic.
My group tends to start drinking before the gaming starts, play a quick game, go to the bar, and then pound them back when we get back and into our mega-game for the night.
I've found that alcohol tends to exacerbate the mild frustration that 40k causes inherently. So I've stopped drinking anything but water and the occasional soda, because I don't really want to get into a screaming match over toy soldiers.

I have been watching "Breaking Bad" and keep substituting "Meth" with "Models" in my mind, it is SO funny then. I think I will use the same gear when "cooking" my models.

While I didn't play in the Friendly tournament, I witnessed some VERY drunk people at that tournament (I was playing nearby). I'm all for having a few while you play, but not becoming an ass.

Bloodbowl, Necromunda, Warhammer Quest and WHFB, sure. 40K, never.
THANK YOU!!
I am not saying beging totally wasted and playing I am saying smoke a bowl or have a couple beers! And for all those people who don't drink/smoke/shoot meth in your eyes/cocaine before each turn, that is awesome and i am sure i would have tons of fun playing vs you guys!
NOW another question what about RPG games (no not for the computer) like DW OR WFRPG DND any of those things?? Like when I am playing in a rpg and we end up in a tavern I pull out a beer and drink! (and maybe other stuff that isn't illegal in the great state of California )

Our weekly Tuesday night game it's traditional for us to buy different beers/alcohols to try. But we're a bunch of family dudes
I also blame children for weight gain and hair loss/graying. It's all their fault, because I swear I eat healthy!

I dig how in a setting where giant, muscled fungus men ride Mad Max cars and use their own teeth as currency, the concept of little engineering dudes with beards was considered a step too far down the aisle of silliness. ADB |

Similar thing here. It’s not infrequent that one or two guys will bring a growler from the local brewery to share. Works out to about a beer, beer and a half for those of us who partake (which isn’t everyone). Nobody is getting plastered, just trying a new beer as a group.
We split our gaming between my house and one other guys’. He doesn’t drink, so there is not much liquor in the place. When I’m at home, sometimes I pour myself a martini to drink while roleplaying, or a different beverage, depending on mixers on hand. Sometimes other people will join me, but not usually.
Of course, if I’m doing a Grill & Game gathering, once we finish with the burgers and head downstairs to the couches, a lot of beers make their way to the basement.

I've been known to partake a few cold ones when playing X-Wing/Warmachine/Zombicide/Boss Monster at home. My gaming store has quite a few youngins in it, so I won't consume there.
We did have a Steamroller at a Legion Hall with a full bar in the basement. Was nice to go grab a Summer Lager (for $2!) while waiting for rounds to end.
Though TempleCon is another story. Pretty much a free for all after hours (in a good way, of course!)

I have been know to partake in a lager or two, or perhaps some cider, while playing with friends at my house, but thats it, I enjoy the relaxing atmosphere I get when drinking a couple with friends. I dont agree personally with smoking (tobacco or otherwise) or other substances of that ilk, but if you do then you do, and it doesnt bother me in the slightest, but I wont do it myself (well I say that, but I have uni soon...)
