The only boardgame Ive bought and played in the last few years was D&D's Wrath of Ashardalon. I like it as I wanted a quick to setup dungeon crawl. Im thinking of getting another of the boxes to expand it at some stage.

Currently, Cthulhu Wars and Kingdom Death: Monster.
They both scratch my itch for well-produced minis (and the addiction of more on the horizon), as well as being very well-balanced and enjoyable games.
Kingdom Death if your group is more in the mood of campaign-style gaming, with terror and high reliability of arbitrary failure (which I count as a bit of a negative).
Cthulhu Wars for single session gaming, but emergent and evolutionary gameplay through each individual learning the powers and threats of the controlling factions and the opponents' factions, and attempting different paths to victory.
Each have their own tremendous replayability right out of the box, but are(and will be) also greatly enhanced by their respective expansions.
Of the two, I would personally side with Cthulhu Wars for a few reasons:
1. It is easier to integrate a new player into a game, rather than a campaign
2. A competitive game with no memory in between games
3. Vibrant, asymmetric faction abilities and consequences that emerge from player decisions with randomness only a minor faction in strategy.
4. Fast, light, vibrant, strategic, but always evolving. A game system that has ever-evolving games due to player choices for factions, environment, participants, and independent actors, prior to and during games.
Though, Kingdom Death: Monster may appeal to some because:
1. They have a consistent group that occasionally fluctuates between 4-6 in order to maintain a campaign, so that the next lantern year can have specifically chosen survivors for the participants invovlved. There is somewhat of a script, but it provides flexibility along the lantern year.
2. A cooperative game that has memory, and serious consequences for choices made throughout. Whether this be through equipment, quarry, innovations, or settlement development. Sometimes surviors may no longer be hunters and be political advisors instead, which may suss out the wonderful evolution available in this game.
3. Personal, Psychological deviance that allows the moral flexibility to experience the strangeness of a culture as a result of a non-normal belief, as well as the challenges that face such a culture and how future actions will depend upon them. The choices that settlements make will change how they proceed, both economically and psychologically."
I recommend both, depending on your group. (And still I try to push other boardgames along with 40k!)

Talisman and Axis and Allies were also my favorites, despite never really winning any of the games I played.
Also, special mention to Cards Against Humanity and Apples to Apples.
Heroscape was the shnizz, man. I used to play the crap out of it. Then I grew up and got into Wahammer 40k...
Talisman is great, and I also like Relic.
Also, shout out to the World of Warcraft Board Game.
My sons still kick my butt at Heroscape. in fact we are always hunting for more stuff for it.

Sheriff of Nottingham. A 'bluffing' game. If everybody at the table is not ROFLTAO by the end of the game, then well, they're hopeless.
Splendor is quick and easy fun too.

Lately, Chaos in the Old World. It's an asymmetric game. Each chaos god plays differently and has different powers and cards. It's pretty well balanced. Three players is good, but four is the sweet spot. Five (with Horned Rat expansion) is cool too.
