I find with online gaming the Greater Internet Fethwit Theory describes the majority of communities, so no shocker there that you're encountering douchecanoes that live to ruin the experience for everyone else.
Where EvE is built on a system of 'do whatever' (CCP doesn't care how much you're griefed fyi, they encourage it), there are other games, mostly FPS' that some of the most outrageously terrible people reside. And LoL, LoL's community is utter crap and needs to be nuked from orbit, just to be sure.
I've played FPS' on console/PC for years, with the PC having a better overall community I feel (haven't played everything, but the original CS community was awesome), whereas almost every single game I played on console was dominated by large amounts of shitbags. More annoyingly, and probably the most infuriating, those same assclowns would actually be GOOD at the game every now and again - so you got the taunts along with the inability to break their necks in-game or spray a mag of ammo into their chest as a reward for listening to their bs.
It's a shame too, because the majority of the AI in games is, like you said, predictable after awhile. The true contest is against another human, someone who will think outside the box and perhaps counter what you considered to be an ingenious strategy. I'm finding that if you play any RTS' the community tends to be a bit better, I can't say I've had a bad time with SC2 or Command and Conquer when i used to play.

Never have truer words been spoken. Mandatory post-natal abortion for part (85%) of the player base never seems like such a good idea as when one's been playing LoL for a little bit.
Playing mainly support characters, I can sympathise. I get blasted if I put wards in the wrong place, if I go into a fight, if I don't go into a fight, or if my healing spell is on cooldown when someone dives into a 2v1. And especially if my lockdown abilities kill someone while another character was within half a mile of them. I'm starting to understand why support is the least taken role.
I think LoL is especially prone to rage because the mechanics mean that it might not matter how well you do--if the guy in the middle or top lane playing against Akali or Vayne dies a lot, you'll have a super-powered monster wiping out your team in the late game. Being a team game where everyone has a different role also means that you've always got a ready-made excuse if you screw up. None of which is an excuse to flame, of course--if you blast someone for a mistake, they'll either think "screw that guy" and play poorly to annoy you, or get nervous and anxious, and play worse.
It's not too bad, so long as I remember to hit "mute all" at the first insult, and try to compliment other people. Of course, I've never played Ranked, which sounds like a true hive of scum and villainy.

Not really, there have always been arseholes in gaming; nobody else remember those gits who would sit at the aircraft spawn in BF1942 Wake Island teamkilling anyone who got into the plane before them(and then, inevitably, when they did get the plane they'd feth up their takeoff and crash into the hut at the bottom of the runway)? Ultima Online griefers? The tossers who made it their entire mission in life to ruin things for roleplayers in SWG? Admittedly it's gotten worse in recent years as all the gits seem to have congealed together into cancerous lumps like the Goons, but there was never a "gaming golden age" when everyone was a proper sportsman.
There have always been wee budding sociopaths out there who can only find joy in depriving other people of fun(inevitably justified by claiming their victims are "taking the game too seriously lulz").

Strife eliminated at least two of those situations: no wards are available anyway for that reason, and assists bring the same amount of gold as killing. Still there can be a lot of toxicity if you do get killed a lot.

No, this is pretty much how it's always been, it's just we've gotten tired of it and no longer want to put up with it as much.

QFT. I personally am tired by people faking strokes, and Multiple Personality disorder on MMOs, in order to be special snowflakes.
And yes. This has happened.

Stalking is, yes. One-offs, though, aren't.

I see, well its not suprising but still somewhat sad to hear bout these things. Makes one somewhat loose hope for the wider specter of gamers/ humans in general

I have only played a handful of MMOs but WoTs is the one that I quit because of the players (and the game in general to be fair). Some of it is the trolling but most of it is just the terrible players. I am not a competitive player but I like to win every now and again not lose 40 games in a row because I have bad teams.
The people that annoy me the most are the stat padders that will refuse to play or disconnect from the game because their teams win rate is low. I have had A LOT of games like that where up to 3 players will leave and yet we still manage to win.
I replaced WoT with Mechwarrior and I've been pretty happy with the other players so far. Seems like most of them like to keep to themselves. Except on extra mission days, thats when all the rude window lickers comes out in full force...

Its worth it . PGI is pretty good with updates and as I mentioned the players seem to be reasonable.

My online experience is mostly WoW and BF4. I seem to luck out in WoW most the time and get a decent crew. Sure I'll still get the occasional " I can tank bro! Yeah so what I'm a rogue, I can tank, I'm elite bro!!! " or getting yelled at as a terrible healer, by the tank that grabs several groups of mobs after being told not to. But mostly fine there.
BF4 though I had to give up. Uhg, the stupid in that game. When you can't get an ammo bag or health after yelling at the people with said gear the whole match, only to have them finally drop it at the spawn......... Yup my blood pressure can't handle that.

Play with close friends is always my solution, get on skype, grab a beer and have some fun.
We play a load of bf4 and inevitably get stomped by better players or our team being windowlickers but we just set ourselves a mini objective or cluster around an obj and have some craic. Wait for the next game and its usuallyl more fun.
Its online play. The old equation of anonimity + immaturity screams true here. Dont let it get to you, not worth the stress.

I'm not really a social game player (I have 0 steam friends...).The only multiplayer game I play is EVE Online (and I use "play" loosely these days, more "keep skills training and dream about the day I have free time"). I was in a good corporation and we kind of just did our thing on the backside of nowhere so I didn't see much of the annoying side of EVE. Seemed pretty good to me.
So I guess I have nothing useful to add to this discussion other than I've never experienced the online game community so I guess I better not start...
