Depends on the basing, usually black. But I always have a bit of colour on the back edge to show squads.

I believe it depends on the army and theme. I did my sinister high elves in mostly black, so to put more black on the bases just didn't work. The model blended right in despite the mossy green flock. I asked the same question in my WiP thread and everyone said leave them black. I did, then I finally got a whole unit done, put them in their tray and those black bases peeked out at me. So they went brown.

My Marines started out with elf grey, but this blended too much with the snow bases, so I redid them in a darker grey.

It depends, don't get caught up in these "rules". Remember back in the day when everyone painted them green and that was just it?
