As the topic says, what color do you prefer for the edges of your bases? (And perhaps a view on why)

Black, all the time. Simple, neat and doesn't clash with anything.

^Agree with this 100%

Would also add that it's a lot easier to get coverage on a black rimmed base as opposed to something else. I still remember trying to get even coverage on my old light brown base rims. Not my most fond memory...

Just my 2 cents

Black.

I treat the rim of the base like a "frame" for the model, and to me black is the cleanest looking color for the job.

I've yet to do a lot of fancy base work or paitning, but I agree that black is the best for me. I think Green or brown just don't look right.

Black.

After I've spent hours painting my miniature, I don't want anything drawing attention away from the model. And nothing draws the eye like a solid band of colour!

All of my old models have a green base rim, which looks silly now.

While I do like the black rim, I've been doing the (mournfang) brown rims on all my newer models and I'm happy with that.

One more tick in the 'black' box. Basing-matched colored rims don't look bad, as a rule, but they don't do it for me, either. Black is the color of "not being there." That is, we're trained to abstract black boundaries away - we don't look at a cartoon and assume that the characters have dark lines tattooed all over their bodies. Since base rims are already decidedly unnatural features, I think it best to minimize their presence with clean, unobtrusive black than to try to make them look natural with color - that's putting lipstick on a pig, IMO.

There are exceptions to this, of course, where I prefer painted rims as a matter of style or necessity. In games where facing is important, some method of marking it facilitates play - sometimes split colors look better than solid black with bounding lines. For board game miniatures, I sometimes like to color-code the base rims - I'm already playing on printed tiles, so the more stylized approach seems to fit.

Thanks for all the answers!

I was considering this since I have just spent a bit of time making new bases for my Dark Angels.

On previous bases I have used the main color of the army for rim color. So far I have only had darker tones on my different paint schemes so the effect have been similar to black.

However, I think I have found that the black rim is the cleanest and as was stated above it "frames" the base and model in a nice way.

My armies for 40k and Tomb Kings are desert based and my Dark elves are an autumn grasslands/forest theme so I use dark brown. I like my minis to look like they have been plucked out of the ground.

I match the terrain used for the basing.

And since 90% of my bases are done in urban terrain, I use Reaper Shadowed Stone.

Black just makes it look like plastic, or that you didnt bother.

It depends on the army, I choose a theme that compliments the primary color of the army. For example, my BA army has dark grey for the rim, with a lighter shade of grey used on the sand/rubble with some scorched grass patches, which makes the reds pop even more.

I used to go green or brown way back when I started, then a mate is like "dude you should leave em black" so I did that and found it much more appealing

Sorry to say but black bores me to death. Steel legion drab is what I go with. To be honest it's just a simple case of ensuring your base edge is a different colour to the base so there is a contrast, the colour is not important. Black works well with some colours and not so with others. It also depends on your battle board colour and model colour.

I, too, like black, but I was thinking of doing some more visible squad markings on them. Potentially with the chapter/company colour

I found that matching the edge color to the tone of the basing made the whole base look more natural. Thus, my 'melting snow' Dark Elves get a muddy brown, and my 'mountain gravel' Dwarves get a medium grey.

Black or dark brown. Never ever the exact color of the basing itself though, unless I'm going for old-school retro green bases. Outside of that specific style, subdued and dark colors do it best since brighter ones will detract from the miniature and draw attention away from it.

Back when i first started war hammer i coloured the bases depending on the point cost of the model. I realized how dumb that was after and switched everything to black. Black is simple. I have done a few as brown in very rare scenarios.

I put a thin layer of white glue on the bases, being careful not to get any on the feet. After that, I dip them in real sand that has some tiny rocks in it. Heck, the sand I use I just scooped some up from the parking lot at my LGS, so I guess its an "official GW" material!

Dark brown, the same color as the dark shades of the dirt on my bases (or dark gray for rubble bases, etc). IMO black looks weird because there's a sudden change in color at the edge of the base, and bright colors just look horrible.

(I guess I should mention that I use scenic bases where the scenery goes all the way to the edge, so it would be hard to get a neat line between the terrain and the edge of the base.)

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

I try to get my bases the warm brown color that the old books were bordered in. Just feels warhammery.

Interesting to see a shift in opinions here... first everyone said black... then it got a bit more varied. Thanks all for the answers!

The short story is that there is no right or wrong here

Am I the only one who likes a bit of colour on the rim?

I like to emphasize the gaming / pawn-like nature just a little bit, so I have used muted tones on the rims - muted red on my Orks, and muted blue on my Space Wolves. Some have whole rim painted in the color, and some have a bit narrower bottom ring.

Currently, I'm thinking about using brighter colors and 'dipping' the base in a very thin layer of paint, so you can get just a really thin stripe along the bottom.

For my clear bases I am considering adding a coloured ring to denote squads.

Otherwiise to match the colour of the basing.

I did brown color before, because it looks like ground. And it's like GW official base paint? I saw they used bright green before.
Now I'm making black bases, because.. I dunno

Typically I do black however with my Tomb Kings I've been painting the rims a drab yellow to match the basing material.

Though I may switch back to black, haven't decided yet.
