I'm with you there. I strongly dislike Starbucks coffee. It tastes bitter, but in a bad way, not a coffee way. Thankfully there are plenty of cool little indie places (that are EXACTLY how Louis C.K describes hipster coffee joints) popping up all the time here.

I completely agree. I always thought it tasted burnt. Like, in a beyond roasted sort of way. I also resent flavored coffee.

I drink the iodine that passes for coffee at work before I drink that crap.

Starbucks coffee actually is pretty darn good.

Objectively, it's really not.
Yeah, it's pretty much overpriced gak coffee. Is it drinkable? Sure, but once you're have actual well prepared coffee made by someone who knows what they are doing, you'll never want Starbucks again.

Yeah, Starbucks regular coffee is worse than Dunkin's (I prefer Dunkin over Starbucks any day).
I'm the same way and I don't even think Dunkin' Donuts coffee is all that great. Down the street from my house, there is a Dunkin and and Starbucks in the same shopping center and I choose the Dunkin ten times out of ten. If I'm the mood for good coffee (or if I have guests in town), I'll go into Old Town Leesburg and get coffee from one of the little locally owned shops we have.

You think your barista wanting to start a conversation about race while you wait for them to brew your coffee is a good idea?

I don't think it's an explicitly bad idea. Coffee houses have historically been social gathering places where ideas are shared and discussed, and that's still true today (although Starbucks might not be the best example of that kind of thing).

I just think it's interesting that many of the hardcore social justice warriors talk a lot about how it's so vital to have more discussions about race and open lines of dialogue and communication, and then when a company actually tries (albeit awkwardly) to facilitate and encourage that, those same social justice warriors absolutely lose their gak, reinforcing the perception that they believe themselves to be the keepers of the one true way to talk about race. Something that, while also well-intentioned, is in many ways equally off-putting as a Starbucks barista asking you how you feel about race every time you order a latte.

It may just be a case of...well it would be great if something was done, but I don't want to actually do it...and most of the hardcore social justice warriors I've had the displeasure of conversing with tend to be very antsy when you don't agree with their opinions. Much like overly religious folks who can't stand hearing alternative views on creation or the place of religion in society.

As for the topic of this thread, my lady works at Starbucks part time to supplement her writing income, and I can tell you that the baristas were put in a very uncomfortable position socially by all of that. Ok so someone comes into your cubicle or whatever place you work and he wants the days accounting report or whatever it is you do that you think is so much of a better job than serving coffee and on top of your job, that you don't really like anyway, you're expected to then start a really awkward sort of conversation with a complete stranger who just wants you to do your crappy job you hate so they can get on with their own life.

It's not like people that actually work and have families and bills and stress, god forbid injuries or diseases they are dealing with are sitting around in their few moments of down time going "man, racism is so prevalent in our society that I'm going to run out somewhere and discuss it instead of worrying about if my kid is feeling better or if the electric bill is going to get paid or if I'm going to be sick for a few days after my next chemo session. Man I hope that thing at the coffee shop is still going on."

Yeah.

Haha, do hipsters still go to Starbucks in Germany? And here I thought Germany was pretty cool...

The key word there is "coffee houses'. Starbucks isn't that. The vast majority of Starbucks customers are those who are there only long enough to receive their drink/snack of choice then leave. There are some people who do sit around and linger but, in my experience, they're mostly students(like my wife during college, her masters, and LSAT studying) studying/writing papers(real writers have to be seen writing!), people meeting other people for the first time so they're in a very public place, or the Hipster type who likes to sit alone and be seen at a coffee place but doesn't want to go to a non-mainstream coffee place.

I haven't really overheard much deep meaningful discussion like you're talking about at any Starbucks, and it's not because the place is too large(they usually aren't that big). Not saying it can't and doesn't happen, but it's few and far between in my experience.

Agree pretty much 100%. We had a local place within walking distance of my office up until about a year ago, and we always chose it over the more closely located Starbucks. Getting a correctly made pour over with freshly roasted beans beats the pants off of any standard fare Starbucks can offer. Then they closed, and, well, Starbucks is what we're left with.

It's because they have a kind of cult-like following. It's like Charles Manson's group, only coffee. And instead of attacking and killing people, they're making burned coffee. But other than that, they're pretty similar.

Well I've had coffee in many places, but for just straight fresh brew, absent chickory coffee which will make your eyes boil, I've not had stronger.
I hate weak coffee and I drink about a quart a day.
