40k is an afterthought.
there is this place you might have heard of called a bar and or club for this sort of thing, you might want to look into it.
and this bit you're going to love seeing as they are an afterthought - at a bar you don't have to bring any man dollies.

But do I know these people? Are they people I know that share the same passion for what I do?

But there are no miniaturized Orks, Space Marines, Eldar, Tyranid or Necron at these alleged places of non-nerd congregation. And they don't let you roll dice.
To be frank, there is no way on Earth I would choose to go to a nightclub over spending an evening playing 40k. I do mean... zero
Now, the new Avengers movie on the other hand... let's just say, it's a good thing it's not premiering on 40k night!!

GK was powerful back then, and no lie. Not like Eldar or Necrons now, but they were the most powerful there was, so they still dominated.
But the important part, and why I think they were so popular, was how laughably easy they were to play.
You got to play the most powerful army in the game, and it took absolutely zero effort. You simply made a huge deathstar and ran it into anything you wanted to be less alive and more dead.
You could make the switch cheaper than any other switch as well, since it demanded almost no models compared to other armies.
So yes, it was very very popular.

That was only one of two builds, and in the UK by far the least popular one. Psyback spam, with 3 - 5 psyriflemen coteaz and henchman, with either just DCA or DCA plus Strikes for warp quake, ruled the roost.
They were even easier to play. Move a bit if needed for objectives late game. Fire large number of S6 TL shots at something until it dies. If it doesnt die, fire more. Repeat.

Fire a lot of str6 you say. Hmm starting to see a patern here.

Is it forbiden to drink alcohol at home with non family members? I know that US has a lot of stupid laws about alcohol. But I doubt it is somehow possible for them to forbid people to drink a beer at home with friends. But then again a kinder surprise is a deadly weapon in the US.
