Hi there Ladies and Gents.
As promised, here is my freshly painted Watch Captain. He was WIP for a long time and that's a nice thing that he is finished at the moment when Deathwatch get some love from GW!
The head is from WFB Chaos Warriors sprues, with small amounts of green stuff to fill the eyes. He is kitbashed and I preferred to keep him simple and sober (Deathwatch models tend to be charged with decorations and stuff). I think it gives him a stealth / spectre aspect that I like. The only worth to note detail is the Scion gorgerin with the golden chain I added.
He does not have a name atm, but for sure he is from the Death Spectres Chapter, based near the planet where my IG is from, Northeastern Fringe, Halo Stars Border.
"Prepare to be purged, alien!"
This guy is kind of a "new beginning". I tried to work on my basing a lot more (even if I"m not satisfied with the green displayed on the pic) and tried to put more effort on the paintjob overall. The photo is far better than the crap I usually make, thanks to the following of simple photography advices found on Dakka.
Still, I hope you'll like him !

An update for the thread :
I acquired 35 second-hand NOS guardsmen for -30% on the Internet. It's going to be a very nice addition to my force, despite the amount of work I will have to put in it.
Here you got the first guy of this new batch. Some holes still have to be filled and some mould lines have to be removed.
It's good to be back on infantry again!

Hi stonned !
Thanks for the comment. This is made with a greenstuff ersatz, the Gerstaecker modelling clay. It's very cheap, easy to handle but less resistant than greenstuff.
This is basic material with basic sculpting work but still, when painted, it works pretty well. I did the face mask with the same thing.
I could post an extensive tutorial on how to make a soldier like him. It's easy; the proof is that I can do it.

Haha yeah. Proof is in the photos. Been thinking I need to bulk out my scions body armour but couldn't work out how. All those lines might be a bit fiddly for me though. Still, damb impressive and much like modern day body armour.

The lines are not that fiddly actually, nothing you can't do with a few hour of training. Use a sculpting tool or a good knife/cutter and then clean the remaining stuff or deepen the lines with a sting and it should do the trick !
Really, it's not that painful to do (even though it does increase the assembling time of each guardsman fairly) and the results are nice.
I noticed your theme was more WW2 (correct me if I'm wrong)so do you think body armour like this would fit your guys?
Oh, and here is the material I used :

Here is something I used in my army and that you might like for your theme, if you don't already know :
Heads and torsos from Mad Robot Miniatures. Nice quality and very large range of products. Special mention to balaclava heads.
https://madrobotminiatures.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=9_10
Maxmini, for Dragunov sniper rifle and AK weaponry :
http://maxmini.eu/conversion-bits/ballistic-weapons
The Assault Group,
Metal RPG, soviet weapons and ballistic visors (I used them on my assault infantry, with a nice result).
http://www.theassaultgroup-shop.co.uk/russian-modern
Hope you will find inspiration in it! Here is a batch of my infantry where you can see the results :
From left to right : Assault Veterans with visors and RPG, a Spetsnaz sergeant, my commander, and Vets from my CCS.
Foreground : Militiamen with Mad robot parts,
Backgroung : Perry Miniatures Cossacks with converted hunting lances.

Very good work there, like the ak-las carbines in particular, noticed them before!
i had considered getting some of the spaz 12 shotguns for my vets for a while, i reckon i should have now haha. Same goes for the mad robot heads, i just didn't have the spare cash to throw at them however.
The assult group however... had not found these, really like the idea of getting some RPK's for my scions.

Really love your conversion work and your painting is good too.
My only criticism of your work is your basing. I really think it lets down your awesome work and I think you could really improve it and it would be easy to do.
Have a look at some basing guides, like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QWOpNPZES1Y or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6qlI4I9Ziu0 I think if you crack the bases, move away from just bright green and loads of flock grass, you will elevate your models to new heights.

Thank for the comments, both positive and critical, it helps a lot.
Mail Lite, your are totally right. Your comment just made me notice that I have plenty of modelling clay I'm only using for body armour but that would be perfect the kind of work your videos describe.
I should also add static tussocks and small rocks, it would change from plain green grass. What color would you propose to replace the green? I confess I'm using this because I have a huge pot of green paint...
Please note I made the first serious attempt on basing with my Deathwatch captain. I found it quite fun, even though I'm not totally satisfied of the result .

Personally I have been doing city scape bases like those ones described in the second video. I use a green stuff-like and get it onto the bases then do a pattern on it to show paving.
I bought some 1/32 scale bricks and I chop them up and have them sticking out of the ground at random points. I then sand cover them and they get under coated with the rest of the model.
I then use a dark grey base, and build up to lighter highlights. My final edge highlight being a light grey. I then black ink the deepest recesses and brown ink the gravel/dirt to give it some warmth. Finally I'll add either a bit of static grass or a tuft of grass.
http://imgur.com/a/Gmazi
One of my most recent. Bad quality but you get the gist.
If you wanted a greener one I would sugest a bit of slate, then sand then a bit of flock. Gravel painted brown with light brown highlights.

No one wants the mechanicum on there back the scary cogheads. My current idea was either to buy a 1/35 kit of at bmp and use the tracks from a Chimera, alternatively, just elongate the front of the Chimera and move the turret back and to the centre.
Also just received a very late Xmas reinforcement of a shock squad to finnish my scions kgb squad as I'm sure youl be glad to hear! Can try some of your techniques.

An update with some WIP infantry. It's been a while I have not assembled little plastic soldiers, and I had a blast putting my Rhayians together. Hands, arms and weapons were not let unconverted, as I like my guys to be different from any other guardsman
Sergeant on the right, in the middle, the guardsman still need a small part of elastic band to hang his rifle.
Almost 40 other are waiting !

As I said, I wanted to post a simple tutorial on how to assemble cadian soldiers to make them true Rhayians. It should take at least 40min if you make a regular pose with not much conversions.
The main reason why assembling is longer are the significative "signature" modifications that really make Rhayian different ; helmets, body armours, face masks, rifles and then, bigger quantity of gear they carry.
So, if you are interested by this short program, here we go!
1 - Soldier body
First step of the process ; assembling the body and the head. Before gluing the pieces, use a file to remove the tiny plastic in the back of the soldier. It will allow the tactical vest to be glued on a flat surface. I use super glue all over the assembling, it's more effective for the modelling clay.
Do the same on the domes of the helmet to obtain a round one, which is standard issue on Rhayian forces. In this example, I used my swiss army knife's tiny scissors so the work is not as clear as with a file.
Then, here how I make the body armor itself. I use different tools to make a 10mm x 6mm (L x l) that I sculpt to get close to the aspect of a tactical vest. This is not great work compared to what you can see on this forum but you'll see, it give correct results. This one is particularly not well done, as I had to use a sting because I temporarily lost my tool ><
You should obtain something like this :
The face mask is small triangle of clay I glued on his face after having remove the chinstrap of the helmet. I sculpted as best as I can to make it looks like a piece of fabric.
2 - Rifle
The rifle is a standard lasgun with a boltgun magazine. It is made by cutting the cannon and turning it upside down, replacing the standard magazine and then fill the holes with clay. Note that the right part of the Aquila has been also removed, despite of the heresy.
You can then glue the rifle with the corresponding arm on the body; sometimes, you will have to cut the superior left corner of the body armor to place correctly the rifle butts
3 - Side and back of the vest + wargear
Here you would have to do the same as for the previous body armor part. I usually start with a the back part, which is totally the same as the front part except it is 10mm x 8mm. Then, I add a 3mm x 8mm rectangle on the back to figure the identification label where R.S.D is written.
For the side parts, use a small ball of clay to roughly sculpt this form. It should be quite thick so you can adapt to the configuration of the arm. You can then sculpt it to obtain this result :
Then you just have to add many many gear like grenades, pouches, knives and other stuff to give them this special force feeling they should have. I also stick a gas mask part from the cadian CCS sprue on the rifle. It figures pretty well a laser pointer IMO.
Here you have a fully geared Rhayian soldier, fully kitted to take on the enemies of the Emperor.
I hope you have enjoyed my tutorial and you could felt the energy I put in these little plastic toys!

An update with some heavy artillery:
This is a 1/32 Flak 32 88mm metal model I got when I was young in Spain. I have always liked this model and I thought it was a shame to let it gather dust on the shelf. So I took my metal saw, some plastic card, 1/32 soviet shells and a command squad and I did this.
I made this a while age but I never had the chance to take pictures. I follow guidelines from the FW Masterclass books for the weathering and brushing techniques.
A friend with a nice camera did it for me and we are quite happy the result.
Feedback very appreciated. Have a nice evening folks.
