Even if GW tanked and another company DIDN'T pick up the game, I'd still keep my minis and stay tuned to Dakka for the resulting free Frontline/Nova/Adepticon ruleset collaboration that would keep the game going. I highly doubt that the game would just disappear, in fact the rules/gameplay would probably be better. And let's also not forget that in this day and age someone here would probably launch a kickstarter to buy the IP rather than see it disappear.

Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment.

It's really weird to me that some people think a game is no longer playable if the parent company stops supporting it. If you have the models you need, Necromunda is perfectly playable and awesome, isn't it?

Yeah, so is BFG.

Hell, you can play Gorkamorka with the rules and currently available models!

If GW isn't around, we won't know what to buy! Our HHHobby of collecting expensive miniatures would be gone!

I would gather up all the 40k players in our area and hold a final armageddon battle for the fate of Terra. The battle would decide the ultimate fate of the 40k universe and then everything would go into storage after that because the story has finished.

I always keep everything that is painted.

And exactly as CalgarsPimpHand states: my favourite game still is Epic Armageddon and we still play that one.

GW can collapse. WHFB might (because it is more generic), but 40k will not and it will still be played.
The community might even the rules right for once :-)

It worked out rather well for BFG, the current rules are better and more balanced than the GW rules were.
Although the BFG community is fading away quietly and is beginning to switch to Firestorm Armada. But i will probably never sell my BFG fleets either.

That's almost how I feel.

Almost. . I just need to change one word, from "The" community to "My" community. I've got no interest in what you lot do with 40k, because I'll never meet any of you. If it fragments into a million local flavours, then to me that's a desirable outcome, as most people will end up with a game they want.

I would continue playing. GW not being around, despite how unlikely that is, is not necessary for me to keep playing the game. Besides, if they did go under and no one picked up the line, I'm sure the fans would take it upon themselves to start putting out their own modified rules and there is always a wealth of miniatures to be used from other makers (which would probably increase if GW wasn't around to put a stop to it anymore).

I'd still play, assuming I had someone to play with.

D&D has been for all intents and purposes dead since 2nd edition amongst my friends who play, but they still play quite alot. I don't see how 40k would be any different, except of course the lack of availability of models would keep most people from starting the game.

We still play LoTR from time to time, as well, and that is basically a dead system.

This is the old "What would you do if World of Warcraft died" type thread.

The only topics more popular on forums then "GW is dying" are, in order:

1) OP Eldar. QQ.
2) CSM Whining
3) GW Dying
4) Newcrons OP.

If, by some mystical chance, GW died, taking 40K with it (highly unlikely, but hey) I would still buy the models I wanted and play the game

@Izural: "What would you do if World of Warcraft died" seems like a very different type of problem...

If they switch off the WoW servers, it's over unless someone buys their software and activates new (or the old) servers.
The community can do nothing.

Agreed, WAR online was switched off and its well and truely dead, theres no fall back position since games run on server hardware and need maintainence, upkeep and $ to keep them going.
If GW tanked, it would be very easy for the community to keep the rules alive ala Gothic and a 3rd party manufacturer to produce extra kits in its place (if they saw a profit there).

If GW went under right now, well...id still play.

Because if GW goes under, they dont take the rulebooks back. I still have all my rules and all my models, and so do the people I play with. We would still play the game.

It's just like buying a board game. You don't need continuous support to play the game again. The game doesn't NEED to change or be updated every few months.

Someone else mentioned D&D. I still play 3rd edition. They havent updated that in quite some time, but we still have all the rules for it.

Still play socially. There is a group that has the models, rule books and so on. Maybe play with more sense rules, you never know.

One's minis don't vanish overnight if the company producing the game you play goes out of business. I already don't buy much of anything from GW anymore, so I would keep using the 11 armies I have and play just the way I do now while ignoring GW. All that vanishes if GW closes up shop is the continual reboot/rewrite/rerelease process for the rules and codecies.

I still play Necromunda and earlier versions of the Epic system regularly, along with Bloodbowl and a dozen other games that aren't made anymore by a variety of manufacturers.

I'd try to keep playing. If not, I'd just get hold of some (now-hopefully-cheap-as-balls) models and try some crazy conversions.

Or I'd do this.

You really think so? Do you think that another company would purchase the rights to 40k and keep it rolling? That was my first thought when speaking with a buddy the other day. That someone else would buy it up and we'd continue to see 40k just from a different company.

I think it'd be fine. If they tanked, I'd hope that Disney would buy them. I mean, they're doing a good job with Marvel Entertainment, right?

But, if they did go downhill, it could also end up like the Pokemon TCG. When I was about 6 or 7, they just stopped selling them, at least across Norfolk (as far as I could tell). Then, in the last 4 or 5 years they started releasing new cards and packs.
So I dunno. Sure Pokemon TCG != Warhammer (40K), but you understand my point.

If I sound like I'm being a condescending butthole, I'm not. Read my reply as neutrally as possible, please and thank you.

You know that there is Private servers right?..., that are for most parts Free, run pretty well, has a thighter community and even custom events/items/zones and even classes...

If Blizz and WoW would tank, players would only go on one of the thousands and thousands private servers there is.

unfortunatly because the code and maintenant to WAR was a bitch and the same for CoX there is no private servers for those( the few that got up tanked after a few weeks because of the difficulties to maintain the servers)
