It seems like there always has been, but I can't help you beyond googling it which you've probably already done.
May be playing a little fifth myself soon, brother in law wants to get in a good old fashioned dungeon crawl before he moves quite a ways away. I'll actually get to play for once, so I'm kind of stoked. Painting some minis to go along with it, if I get the chance.

There is a character creator but it only has the free classes/races on it. It is still useful even in limited form.
There is an Android app (tablet or phone) that allows one to make and save characters but it is a whole $3.

Thanks! That app works well enough. Follow up question: has any supplement added to the available backgrounds? The ones in the PHB are kind of limited.

The Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide and Princes of the Apocalypse (I think) added some.

I also believe Out of the Abyss has some Underdark specific backgrounds (maybe one?).

Can't go wrong with Otherworld miniatures, they are very nicely sculpted and the castings are very clean, reasonably priced and a decent range too. They are smaller than GW, but also look better than GW. They are 25mm instead of 30mm.

Oh man, the first monster I see I'm going to sneak up behind him, whip out my wand, and shoot my magic all over his ass.

Personnaly our group always used WHB models, since our regular GM as a huge collection of various WHB armies on hand anyway.
Also was reading about 5th, and for some reason i really want to make a Warlock/Bard, get him a Guitar and play it as a Power/Death Metal Singer who can zap with thunder riffs and ice cold shreds his ennemies...
Black Sabbath and Disturbed soundtrack aboslutly mandatory.

Our group has a Warlock/Bard based on the Dr. Rozco from Metalocalypse.

Does... does he do... co-co-cocaine?
Is that his Warlock Pact?

I appreciate all the help. Buying non GW miniatures is daunting!
You can get a ridiculous amount of D&D official and Pathfinder miniatures really cheap on sites like noble knight. miniature market is more expensive for them but you can get models there real good too. 5th is simplified to the point where miniatures arent necessary, like pathfinder and 3rd ed, your abilities are not grid square dependent. minis do still provide the players with a good idea of where people are located, how many enemies and who has attacked who. but 5th doesnt really need it the way 4th does. a good dm can make minis enhance 5th so by all means go for it, also there are really good cardstock dungeon sets out there to help with the minis. (that and some of the monsters are "odd" to describe so seeing them in a scale miniature can really get the point across. a brimorak demon described is a lot scarier than seeing the tiny little dude on the table)
