Over thinking, they have radium rifles because John Carter has radium guns. The Mechanicus is based on Barsoom after all.

ERB had them fire bullets, but something about them being radium made it vastly more powerful than conventional arms. Of course Radium was new and wow at the time, meaning it worked as a 'ray gun' that didn't need to follow physics.
