That is ofc also possible, but one should also ask why it was the Angels Sanguine doing the testing. If the Soul Drinkers were thought to be IF successors surely the IF/successors present would have done the testing if they had the means readily available? It would seem it is possible but not every Chapter (or Chapter ship/facility) can do it. Though it does make some sense that Chapters with a dangerous flaw, like the BA and SW, would have more equipment for detecting possible genetic markers related to those flaws manifesting.

Maybe it was all a conspiracy to keep the inquisition away.

Back to the topic it does show the that the space marines have means of testing gene seed.

It was a tribunal - they were probably called in because the Fists would be suspected of bias towards their successor chapter. That part makes perfect sense.

Hmm... Well, that does make some sense. And the story shows marine Chapters have the means to do genetic tests on Geneseed provided they get access to samples.

But it still doesn't help a Chapter that doesn't know it's origins. They'd have to steal geneseed from others to test, or petition the High Lords of Terra (or the AdMech) for access to records of their lineage. As if it wasn't humiliating enough to admit you've lost your history! Even beyond the geneseed flaws that mark some Chapters the real weakness of marines is their pride. Admitting the shame of losing their records would be intolerable, asking for help in recovering them impossible.

True, especially for someone like the Blood Ravens, who apart from their reputation as kleptomaniacs are the nerdiest of nerdmarines.
