Wrong. Undercosted unit is undercosted whether there's 1 or 30 on the field. Sure effect is more visible when there's 30 but 1 is still undercosted. That's why the tau commanders 0-1 "fix" is no fix at all. Just bandaid to reduce effect but problem still exists.

Dark reapers could be 0-1 model per army and that model would STILL be undercosted so everybody would take it anyway.

Consider investing a bit more into the game. Look at your list again. See what works and what does not. You can watch videos and read forums on how to play your army.

Try to avoid opponents that bring cheesy list unless it is agreed that the game will be played competitively.

I'm going to go back to a suggestion someone else made earlier. Try playing smaller games for a bit. You are breaking out 2K point games that leave your opponent and yourself exhausted, irritated, and/or insufferable well before the game ends. Stop doing that to both of you.

Play some 1000 point games. Use different facets of your army and experiment with tactics. Let the game end fast enough to be able to discuss what happened with your opponent. You just might gain the opportunity to get better because you've managed to play full games and actually get to use your army.

Also, get some Wave Serpents on the battlefield. Those suckers are hard to kill and will let you drop some unit in a location to execute your plan without just dying turn 1.

Or maybe I should just stop being a nice person and get 30 DR, and dominate the only game I'll get to try with them. Then they would be house ruled out of existence as soon as I bring them, so why bother wasting so much cash? I run Uthwe, because the FNP helps.

Is he playing dark angels with hellblasters for crazy plasma shenanigans with an ancient for fire again on a 4+ and an apothecary to get back up with an hq that gives them all 4++ invulnerable save?

Something along those lines, yes. I don't have much of his stuff memorized. One of the guys has a crazy banner that causes rerolls as well. He also makes use of some stratagem that allows him to Tau my deep striking units.

So he has a strong army but if you bring something he finds strong it gets house ruled out?

Why are you letting him do that or not doing the same to him? It sounds like the problems here are that your opponent is a donkey cave and you're enabling him.

Or OP is using a silly excuse to not buy good units.
Also, melee sucks, especially for elder. Look into investing into better units.

Casual games often do. Competitive games often come down to the first roll though.

Well yes, the whole "I can't have any dark reapers because they might actually be good" isn't great. The suggestion that his opponent who's been curb stomping him for years has a problem any time he brings something strong makes me think that it's more the opponent (but we only have OP's side of this, of course).

There are models in Aeldari beyond dark reapers that are good :(

First:

If you're playing with a half Dark Eldar force, that is A LOT of the problem. Index Dark Eldar are terrible. Like "we don't talk about them" level of terrible. If you're playing Dark Eldar out of the Index, I REALLY hope you're not playing Craftworld Eldar out of the same index. They were not in much better shape there. If you are, do yourself a favor and get the codex. The eldar Codex has been one of the biggest triggers for "competitive" players since it was dropped, right there along with Astra Militarum. Dark Eldar gets their Codex today, and it is looking just as good too.

Next you need to understand the core concept of Eldar: they are a specialist army with units who are designed to counter other units and concepts. If you get your silver bullet aimed at the prime targets, you will win. If you cannot get those matchups, though, the game becomes A LOT more difficult.

Fire Dragons shooting at Conscripts won't win you many games. Swooping Hawks trying to hit Primaris isn't going to go far either. I find it generally beneficial to have a splash of a lot of different units just in case I find myself in a position where I need a specialized tool.

The few generalist tools they have are:

Anything Shuriken. Shuriken is so good. Match with Doom for hilarious results. Shuriken can engage just about any target and get some decent results with enough fire.

Psykers. These guys fix just about any game. If you're running Warlocks, maybe try to squeeze in an extra 10 points for the Wound and real Smite for running them as Spiritseers.

Spirit Host. These guys are expensive, but frustrating for an opponent who isn't expecting to run into them. Wraithblades do decent melee, and are tough to remove. Wraithguard with D-Scythes are great for loading up high AP wounds. Stock Wraithguard are silly good out of Webway Strike against someone who doesn't adequately bubble wrap his army.

Speaking of Webway Strike, 20 Guardians with Shuriken Cannons in Webway Strike can blast a pretty ugly hole in just about any unit. It is fun. Try it if you like Guardians.

Dark Reapers are spectacular against Primaris, too.

Bring a Wave Serpent or two, as well, their Serpent Shield discharges are sneaky useful when cracking tough nuts or hitting an annoying unit with the last couple of wounds to wipe it. I feel that Wave Serpents are a pretty solid counter to Plasma spam, which is what Primaris likes to do... stupid Hellblasters. It takes all the bite of the Overcharge away, as it reduces the 2 damage back down to 1.

Eldar is a sneaky faction that plays better when forcing opponents to play outside their strengths to counter them, or when they are allowed to specialize to counter those opponents.

Dark Eldar? Well, all of that changes today, so I'll reserve my critique on how to do them better and leave that to people who can speed read
