Speaking from experience with btgo40k playing necron, nids, and tau, the pins work fine with asymetrical armies. You DO need to consider the pros and cons of msu vs larger units. Its a good thing.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

As far as weapon options on basic troops the structure of most armies and the weapon rules in Gates of Antares supports a "small arms" list of a carbine, a rifle, a shotgun, and pistol/CCW; the Guard are certainly no exception. I'm probably not putting a long-las in as a small arms option, however, because the ten-guys-with-ten-sniper-rifles model GW uses for scouts/rangers/ratlings/etc. seems very antithetical to what a "sniper" is.

Actually, I'd prefer long-las to be like the stalker bolt rifle, a heavy lasgun with 12" extra range, than something with the 'sniper' rule.

I am running into some strange scale problems trying to port 40k to Antares; since Antares is based on Bolt Action it's built on the same model of the rifle squad with the one-gun field artillery teams and the tanks with a main gun and a secondary gun or two, rather than 40k's model of mixed infantry/heavy weapons followed by massed heavy weapons followed by tanks with a bunch of different guns.

Some of the scale/heavy-weapon-spam issues may end up being addressed simply because in the context of the system something like a Crisis suit is probably going to get lumped in with the Sentinels and the War Walkers in the single-model "armoured car"/"light artillery" bit of the army list rather than being squads of 3-9.
