That certainly makes him sound more interesting, but they definitely need to show that off more often. The failure thing comes from him constantly being turned back- too often they didn't make it apparent enough he was actually succeeding in his aims.


He suffers horribly from both inconsistent writing and in Gathering Storm getting upstaged entirely after book 1. What seemed to his story originally turned out to be more a vehicle to give Eldar and the IOM some big developments. Between that and having more and more traitor primarchs back puts him out of focus.
