Just do it mate. The club local to you, the GW in LH and the one in Welly as well as the Warlords group are filled with really nice people. They are always ready to help out new people and have a chat or throw some dice. There are a couple of less than pleasant people but you will work out who they are in about 10 seconds.
Hey, yeah no i have been once to that local one, really nice people and awesome atmosphere, but i think i went on the wrong day because they were playing mostly flames of war and some other miniture games, but those games looked so cool i almost wanted to get in to that, and i did talk to some guys about a game they were playing involving especially small miniatures, like as in 1 miniature person is the size of like a space marines head, which was awesome imo. Any way i had to leave after only like 20 minutes or 30 minutes, but any way once i have finished GUO and finally understand how to actually play i will push my self to go and leave my cave.
As for the people saying if there's no game then no point in painting, i disagree and really like the collecting aspect of the different models, and just painting them. But if you can also go to war and collect/paint that is even better, and definitely ill get there, but if i didn't, i would be just as happy painting and collecting.
Thanks everyone.

I'm not sure I agree. I buy and paint miniatures for gaming, not to collect. I mean I own a few different pairs of shoes too for walking in, but I wouldn't say I collect shoes.

Because shoes are shoes, not models that you paint lol
I just think that's a bad comparison no offense.
And there are collector brands of shoes that people don't wear ever.

Well, I'm a wargamer and painter, not so much a collector.
However, I'm only playing painted models nothing else.

When I started I was very much a gamer but since returning to the hobby, I tend to spend more time painting now and I'm picking up models because I like them and not because they're good.
I play some games, but I find pick-up games very hit or miss, due to not knowing whether someone is competitive or not.

I basically only paint and collect nowadays, I would however be up for going to war if I found someone interested in playing 2nd edition ruleset and houseruling all the new toys

Like many of the other guys here who are experiencing or approaching middle age it is mostly just purchasing (i'm not saying collecting, that's such capitalist nu-speak in my view ), building and painting.
I love everything about these IP's, even the dumb as hell stuff but have also found when I do get around to battling it never lives up to my expectations and is a little anti-climatic.
Y'know guys..I'm not sure the current mass battle rulesets by GW are for me. I see what they are doing with the design but from an AoS supporter since day one I',m beginning to miss the different gameplay of fantasy and some of the silliness and smaller scale of early 40k.
I probably spend the most "hobby time" reading about 40k though. Whether that be forums, a codex or a novel.

Its hard to paint and play with something that you do not have. Hence, we are all collectors to some degree. Perhaps not collectors for the sake of collection (which is perhaps what you were objecting to), but we do plan out and acquire our armies. My wife would certainly call it a collection!

Paint and play.
For me, this hobby is greater than the sum of it's parts. I flip-flop on how much I actually enjoy the process of painting, but I always enjoy finishing models and units and seeing my craft improve. I also really like the aspect of collecting (though only when the minis are finished, not collecting grey plastic) - seeing my armies grow is always really fun and exciting and really engages my imagination.
That being said, all the former is only exciting to me because I get to take them out on the battlefield when they're done.
Gaming itself, I do enjoy, but I wouldn't do it if it wasn't with painted miniatures. I'd much rather spend the time sitting and work on painting the armies until everything is actually painted and nice looking - at that point, the game is fun and exciting and it's great to see some context getting applied to the collection, and the fluff and the miniatures and the hobby that went into making it all happen. Without all that, I'd rather just play a video game or something rather than go to all the effort of lugging miniatures and terrain around.

Do to life getting in the way of the hobbies I have been modeling only. The scene at both my shops in my area has dried up do to price increases for 40k. I will be starting up with kill team shortly then 40k. But the hobie started for me when I was 12 and painting historical models and early D&D lead figures. The question for everybody is what came first for you painting or playing a game.

Collect and paint only. I don't have a competitive mindset, so playing the game for the game itself doesn't make sense to me. Plus the logistics of hauling armies around is a pain.
For a while a few editions back I had a group of friends who all played, and that gave me the opportunity to set up narrative situations which was a lot of fun. They've all moved on from the hobby, though.
I'd like to try 8th edition since it seems like much less overhead than the old versions, but alas.

I "go to war" mainly, although I only do so with my best mate as I can't find anyone else where I live to game with, and we tend to proxy models a lot...
I'm in the luxurious position of, besides having models from Space Hulk and Warhammer Quest (1995), and my best mate having a similar amount of models as I have, having over 100 not very well painted, and in some cases falling apart, Dark Angels Space Marine models, a few GW tanks, a handful of Eldar and Chaos, and some of the metal characters for those armies plus a few odds and ends such as the old metal Commissar Yarrick (lobster claw version), all of which I bought circa turn of the century, or at least prior to 2005.
These days though, even though my Dark Angels need a refresh, I feel I've been largely priced out of the Games Workshop hobby besides playing the game with what I and my best mate have already, and I don't really like anything but Games Workshop games. So, as I have a lot of models, and cannot really afford the £200+ (more like £300+) outlay for a new 1000-1500pt AoS/40k army, let alone the £500+ for all the Codices (know thy enemy), I don't buy many new models these days.
Having said that I did recently buy a Necron Catacomb Command Barge (because neither I nor my best mate have anything to proxy it properly with) and 2 years ago I bought an Imperial Knight - because, big model.

Yes, I think we're talking about hobby collecting:
Systematically seek and acquire (items of a particular kind) as a hobby.
The other definitions aren't related to hobby collecting and imply that any group of related things is a collection.

Which is where my confusion comes in, 'cause expanding the meaning of 'collecting' in this context to include simply buying minis and then leaving them on sprue, in boxes makes the term meaningless.

I've always been a models first kinda guy. started with tanks & fighters, added 40k in RT, left in 2nd, went back to nonfiction military, added 1/24 cars and finally came back to 40k for 8th.
the models have to look good first and foremost, then fit into how I would use the unit, and finally rules last.
In order for me to get "into" the game, it really has to be as visually engrossing as the mission/opponent makes possible.
So I do all 3 but focus on the building & painting more so than the game. While I do enjoy playing @ the flgs, even if I dont get to play when I'm down there, I can have just as much fun "shootin the scheiss".

As someone who has WAAAAAAYYYY too many models I find myself going to the hobby shop every friday and.....not playing. Occasionally I paint, sometimes we play a board game, but most of the time I just hang out and talk to all my friends. I also can't stop a little retail therapy when something I like comes along which leads to quite the pile of forgotten miniatures. It feels weird since I pretty much HAD to have a game back in the day but now I have found what I truly love about the hobby are all the interesting people I have met who are also amazing and accepting of me. We have a great group of people who love to play as much as they love to talk and we still manage a competitive tournament crowd. Really its just a chance for me to go out and be me (fyi I am a transwoman who is a bit in and out of the closet, my gaming group has been a major boon because they completely accept me for who I am so it has very much been my "safe place" where I can truly be myself in public without fear of harassment) Painting is of course a chore but after some long personal battles I am finally getting myself back together and getting back on the painting hobby horse. I like to think I'm fairly good at painting but I like to lavish too much attention on the individual model so painting 200 guardsman is becoming a bit of a chore. I will definitely put myself in the paint only category for the moment but as I learn more about myself I may get back into the game, maybe even try a tournament or two. Currently I only enjoy doing small teaching games and super fluffy fun games where we take our time, the classic "beer and pretzels" style (san the beer and with low salt pretzels) and I always enjoy the spectacle that is Apocalypse (our yearly game averages around 80,000 points and 4-6 titans + warlord titans)

I made miniatures and played wargames before I played miniature wargames.
Playing the game is definitely an important, if not the more important aspect of the hobby for me. There are a lot of miniatures, such as infantry, that I probably wouldn't buy if I weren't using them to play a game with. Also, the game part of the hobby is the part I do with other people, and I highly value the social aspect of this hobby. It's one of the things that sets us above video games.
That said, I enjoy painting too, and take great pride in all the tactical markings on my tanks and such.

Guardsmen, hear me! Cadia may lie in ruin, but her proud people do not! For each brother and sister who gave their lives to Him as martyrs, we will reap a vengeance fiftyfold! Cadia may be no more, but will never be forgotten; our foes shall tremble in fear at the name, for their doom shall come from the barrels of Cadian guns, fired by Cadian hands! Forward, for vengeance and retribution, in His name and the names of our fallen comrades! |

Personally, I've been building models since I was ten - a few cars, lots of planes and an array of tanks. Also grew up having lots of plastic army men, as well as a substantial GI Joe & Star Wars figure/vehicle collection.
Wargaming and the likes appealed to me because it was a bit of combination of all of the above. I liked gathering an army of figures that I got to put together and it had rules for handling the imagined combat. It's just that I only painted because it cost too much to pay someone to do it for me. And by the time I got finished painting things, I was too tired to play and the rules had changed once again :(
