I think the better question is, why after seeing what angron and fulgrim become and what happened to horus would Prety plan something to become a daemon

He saw their mistakes and thought he could avoid them? I think a big part of Chaos is a lot of people think they're outsmarting it right up until it all goes wrong.

And Pertuabo is very consistant in thinking he's smarter then his brothers

Doubt it - there were no primaris there. How are they gonna flog all their Inceptors and Repulsors and Reflectors and Investors?

Jessica Alba is to hot like Fzorgle is to GW failing at life.
- Phryxis on Slaaneshi psychic powers

Lets forge a narrative! Your aspiring champion makes a wet farting sound, much like when you let go of a filled balloon, as he/she is sent to eternal damnation in the warp for defeating Calgar.

there's this thing called the Horus Heresy novels. not a primaris in sight, and it's their top selling novel line.

The issue with daemonhood is that while it's the end of the 'path to glory' for a chaos champion, it's not a wholly positive thing.

For some barbarian in the old world or serf in 40k, the idea of becoming a super powerful immortal warp beast seems like a huge upgrade.

For a primarch or spacemarine captain, you already have loads of power and agency- becoming a slave to a warp power is an obvious downgrade in agency. Primarchs are basically immortal anyway, though they are not invulnerable.

All chaos primarchs got Daemon'd, some against their will, some deliberately, some out of desperation. There was never any question that they wouldn't, because that's where the dark god's wanted them.

Angron got his through a ritual of sorts on the part of Lorgar, not as a reward for service. Perturbato getting 'elevated' is not solid evidence of success- in a sense it's a failure state that puts him solidly in the pocket of the gods.

IW would have been far more interesting as a renegade legion that was totally unaligned to chaos- retaining their primarch and operating as a largely unified marine faction that fought without any of the Imperial restrictions. You could still have chaos alligned splinter warbands that play like current IW.

I always preferred the Iron Cage story as a IW win. It was really flavorful. It highlighted the IFs stubbornness. Their devout belief that if they just keep fighting, they'll win. Even if defeat is staring them in the face. It was also a consolation prize for chaos. "We lost the war, but we sure showed you! "
