For me the issue with superheavies is that they look stupid on 6x4 foot boards. The game looks far more artificial with these huge models stamping around on such a small play area. I think they look fantastic in games with larger battlefields, where they fit better into the visual scene created by the battlefield. They are really cool models and I have always love the background around the superheavies and the parts of novels where the normal level heroes have to take on something so huge. So I think they have a place, particularly in special scenarios where they are the centrepiece. But trying to fit them into the general game was a mistake to begin with I think, and now we have people who have invested in armies of them and it would be unfair to deny them the use of their models.
It is a shame though - they, along with aircraft, have ruined the look of 40K for me. Both are better suited to a smaller scale if played on a 6x4 or much larger tables.
Apocalypse looks like it fixes some of the issues and is designed more with these units in mind. Does it play on a default bigger board, does anyone know?
