One of their old firms were called the Gooners (which yep deriving from Gunners). Now it's become the standard term.

Ork culture of course famously stemmed from football hooliganism so I'd just assumed it was a little twist on that.

Hm, well, given that they are predominantly young men, I'm sure there's an intersection

This whole thread reminds me of a Discord where we had to explain to an Aussie what Gooning meant to the rest of the online community and that it wasn't something done with a spinning clothes hanger and bagged wine.

Ah yes, the goon box and bag, which is used to play the game goon of fortune.

I assumed they choose Gooners for both the play on Gunners and goons being mobsters?

The play on Gunners, and self-deprecating humour. Not really the mobster connotation.

Yeah, that lines up. They were similarly snide in the Heresy 3.0 roundtable.

They're a very competitive lot, they often seem like they can struggle to empathise with people who see their miniatures as more than vessels for desirable statlines.

Maybe they can have a better Historical section now or.... who am I kidding XD

Definitely one of the most super generic names you could go for, especially in our hobby space. Doesn't help that the reasoning is also very dependent on specific internet lingo on a specific part of the anglosphere, since who knows if anyone will use the word "goon" in that way 5 years from now.

I think the worst part about it is how rude they're taking some of the feedback, definitely gives me the same vibes as when they do some of their editorial pieces where they like to take a fat dump on people's thoughts in the comments:

People are making too big a deal about this name change.

They picked a new name & told us why.

All we need to do is go "Eh. Ok."

That looks like the site designer matching the energy of the "feedback"? Which I think is completely fair to do.

I always dislike the I can be rude, but the professionals must respond politely back.

I had thought I should post some quotes I had seen using the phrase just last few days. It’s so common in some game community’s. So often people even proud of being that way.

Something has to entertain us whilst we wait for 11th edition.

And those of us not into Orks/IG/Marines are going to need entertaining for way longer!
