I would do something akin to Knightley - double up. I think exorcists are definitely the best fit for count as GKs, but give yourself the option of running vanilla, especially given they have a character chaplain (crozius, power fist and jump pack iirc). I'd even consider just having 2 squads of tacs and 4 razorbacks. Split em in half and kit 5 men out as mini assault squads, chuck in a chaplain and you've got a playable, useful force.

Jealous about the Librarian model it's on my must own eventually list as well.

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. So it turns out that this is what I can do in a day. My estimate of remaining time at 4 days was about right, it seems: my parents are descending tomorrow (woo) and next Monday keeping kids of nursery. Still, if I can do this much in each of my other 3 days, I'll be very pleased indeed. I've decided the best way to approach the painting is on a Squad by squad basis, with a fun thing or two in the mix to distract me. This made for a good day, mentally at least.

First off, you may remember the marvellous Knightley offered to do me a Grandmaster, and here is, newly based (and about 90% there) by me:

I am indebted to Knightley, as being able to see his physical brushstrokes has really helped, especially with the lenses. I love the power weapon effect, and am considering doing it for the rest of the force; thoughts (also @ Knightley - care to give us a walkthru of it?!) This would mean losing the lightning on the test model, but I can live with that.

Onwards. The NDK first:

I am pretty happy, generally, though I'm concerned that the metal is simply too dark generally. I wonder whether either more silver, or other metals (brass/copper - not gold, I think, as that's already in evidence) would help. Thoughts?

Some extra detail of the base showing the Dragon Warrior dread a little better. Fun to do - as erithromycin commented, "Only you would waste a dreadnought on a a scenic base." Hell yeah.

Took loads of the LRC, and they just plain didn't work. Never mind *sigh*. Switched to wife's camera, with a bit more success:

It's probably going to get BT swords along the top of each faring, just to break it up a bit. But, otherwise pretty much done, apart from muddying up the tracks. A heinous kit to build (it's an old metal one), still very happy with it, especially the depth of colour on the red. I managed, with the aid of micron pens, to write, "Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil for thou art with me" on the book on the front, much to my childish amusement. Gave lens work a shot, opinions? Oh, and the interior's also been painted - yup, plush leather seats and all!

And the squad of the day is Interceptors. Mostly done bar, as mentioned, power weapons.

Obviously, he doesn't have a power weapon I'm really thrilled with the fabric, hope the rest of y'all are too. It's part of my general switch to Vallejo paints, using: GW Black Primer> Vj Terracotta > GW Sepia > GameCraft Royal Purple > GC Dark Red > Vallejo Bright Red > GC Orange. No red ink wash at present, GW or VJ, not sure, not sure at all. Very happy with how the jump pack turned out - lens! - and aegis hood made from DW termie shield.

I really have no idea what to do to razzle-dazzle the daemonhammer. Answers on a postcard, please.

Oh, how I love Sternguard models. Yes, I know, GKs can't have PFs - I don't care, he looks cool, and it's an easy way of telling apart the justicar! Thanks to the mighty bashthebosh for the fig, btw.

The horns on the CSM definitely need work, but quite pleasantly surprised how this one turned out. I thought it looked a little daft when I made it, but all in all, quite content.

Ok, I admit it. I am a closet Nurgle worshipper. Always have been. Really love the putrescent stuff. And GKs give me an excuse to put some of that out on display!

So there you have it, a day's efforts. I'm still not sure, I'm thinking particularly that the SBs could do with a different metal on them, just to break it up a bit (possibly P3 Brass Balls). All C&C, as always, more than welcome and indeed desperately sought!

Later, and thanks for listening,
graven.

If you're worried about the 'darkness' of the armour, maybe just hit the models with a light drybrush if Mithril Silver.
Personally though, I think it's pretty cool to have some dark Grey Knights. Too many people will just be painting them all shiny and that doesn't fit their fluff.

It's all looking great to me though. The idea of a real dark NDK works for me, constantly walking about with flamers spouting flaming jelly, it'd be sure to get singed.

In hindsight, I'm inclined to agree. Dark metal just doesn't photo that well I guess. And thanks for the kind words! I'm seriously considering jade power weapons just now, as I think the contrast will pop nicely. I'll try to get a test done this pm, along with some work on a gms fig or two.

Great stuff Graven - just looking back through this thread and OH MY GOD you've done a lot of work - both the modelling and the painting are superb. Love the more gritty, grimy look to the metallics on the Grey Knights - makes them look much more 'serious' - like they really mean business. Also, the Mentor Legion! - how lovely to see these guys, particularly with the proper old-school owl icon. Love it - as you know I'm a fan of less-obvious marine chapters ;-) in fact I dallied with Mentors years ago (like, 18-20 years ago to be honest...), I'm sure I've got one somewhere with an attempt at a freehand owl... will see if I can dig it out for a giggle. Keep up the good work mate, this thread bookmarked.

Thanks for the support! Yeah, we have Dark Eldar, why not Dark Grey knights? or maybe that should be Grimdark Knights?

Continuing that theme, I've decided to go with an obsidian effect for the blades: stippled White over the prime, layered dark green, and glaze medium. Is lush; would Love to put up pics but my broadband is down till the start of next week. Boo, rubbish, etc.

To give myself a wee break from painting, yesterday I built a squad of termies from bits, and played some Game of Thrones CCG, as well as finishing Dance with Dragons. DIY today, might try to get some phone pics up via Facebook or some such.

Wow graven, love the little summary, i love your Dark Knights (;P). Honestly, they just look a lot more....brutal than the shiny shiny GKs, nice work.

For the NDK, maybe make the whole model look like it has been bathed in flames a few times (as suggested before) may work, but kind of in reverse. I mean, black base and then (dry)-brushing the edges with copper/brass to pick oput the details.

Just my £0.02, keep it up bud!

Dark knights I am pleased by this!

But rather annoyed with fw. Did an order for myself a week or so ago, and rang up to ask if the Imperial Strongpoint would be available any time soon; they told me Mid- late August. Had I known it was out today, I'd've waited. Their loss, but still. Also, they sent me BT storm shields rather than GK brass etch for no apparent reason. Ho hum.
Still, in other news, I got a BA battleforce through from Battleroad - huzzahs all round!

Would that mean we'd both have to come up with some kind of diorama as to why one of our guys only had half a shield, lol?

Hey, lost in mid post - many thanks indeed, very much appreciated!

Not doing much today - was at a wedding till midnight, wife's got a half day, so just chilling really. Added some plastruct supports to my Sanctum Sororitas, organised my GK bits (next up: 4 more halberdiers, and a Falchion squad for horde armies), built/rebuilt gms fig for Njal, and started work on a psilencer Sternguard conversion. Still at war with bees...
