You have truly been an inspiration and I have to say this is possibly the greatest army I have ever seen!!

I do though have another question which you may or may not know the answer to (so no pressure, this isn't twenty questions or anything! ) - I would like a slightly lighter tone to the BA I'm planning, and I had hoped to go for blood red as my main/mid tone, then possibly very light blazing orange/vermin brown edge or zenithal highlights (all GW colour ranges) but I have no idea on the basecoat/shadows. I realise after reading through you use a non-GW red for your base, but in theory would the basecoat actually make any difference to the type of blood red I end with? ATM I was just going to start with blood red on a GW White undercoat, however, I wanted to know if you (or anyone out there!) had any experience of whether or not the colour used underneath would make any difference to the end "red" (if that even makes any sense???) I would be happy to use something like red gore or mechrite red as a base, as I am often a litle worried blood red looks a little "washed out" otherwise - do you use the red primer for any reason in particular or just to be easy?

Mike.

Thanks again for the kind words.

For the question about blood red, the base coat colour will definitely affect the red you end up with, especially when applied with an airbrush. The GW blood red is somewhat transparent and doesn't have as good coverage as some of the foundation paints like mechrite red. When applied with an airbrush, the transparent properties is more pronounced so if you wanted a lighter, brighter red, using a white primer basecoat as you said would give you the results you want. Always do a test model first though. For myself, the red primer choice was mainly due to the fact I'm lazy and wanted it to speed up the painting process and also it gives a more darker, realistic appearance for my models.

Well once again, thank you!

I'll do a few test models I'm sure and hopefully I will be in a position to let you know how I get on with pictures in a few weeks!

Speaking as a man who recently completed a Calgar conversion for my blood angels army, I am left with one final (and I promise it really is final question) did you ever win the painting competition you mentioned you would be entering with Calgar and his honour guard squad on something like page 3 or 4? we never saw any pictures and after seeing the librarian recently, i'm dying to see how you got on with the blue!

Haha, oh yeah I totally forgot about that plan. The calgar and his HG are still in the same state as they were seen in the pictures...didn't touch them. I ended up using my BA dreadnought as an entry and I did win 1st One of these days I'll get around to Calgar and his cronies...right after I'm done with all my BAs.

Thanks Grey. GW started being very generous on bits with the BA and extended that to the Grey Knights. The SG and Death Co are two of my favorite boxes (I have 2 boxes of SG and 4 boxes of DC) and try to spread the bits throughout my other squads.

Buy the boxes Grey, you won't regret it, all the pieces are super useful in almost any army for commanders or characters. Great weapons, great armor, great heads... just about the only thing I never cared for were the Bieber heads lol

Quick update: Been doing more work on my bikes this week and am almost finished. I need to finish the details on the bikes, do some more shading and then finish off the riders. I decided to take WIP pics of the progress:

Eggroll, it seems whenever I look at your work, I immediately think 3 things:

1. Wow - that looks great!
2. I wish I could paint that well...
3. ... need to stop buying miniatures and save up for that airbrush!

Inspiring work as always. I was thinking of starting a Lamenters army, but seeing your beautifully painted Blood Angels makes me want to use them instead

Look forward to seeing more work on the bikes

Yes, save up for the airbrush. It's worth it! If you get the veda from ebay for 30ish dollars and a hardware compressor, you can get started for around $120 so it's not that bad.

Thanks, the dark angel/blood angel thing I find are quite interchangeable which is why I got the ravenwing box set. All the extra bits were nice too. Soooo many leftover DA iconography though.

Finished off the bikes tonight. Still need to do the riders though and the one side car for the attack bike.

Good looking bikes. I like the limited chipping on the bikes and dirt on the tires. Makes em fit with the rest of the army.

Are you planning on putting any bases on the bikes?

I find it interesting you are getting better and faster. Really shows off both your skill and the power of the AB. I've thus far only used mine for basecoats, but it makes adding the color shifts at that level much easier and smoother.

If you want to ditch the spare DA stuff, lmk. I can always use extras.

Thanks. Good question about the bases as I'm still on the fence about using them. So far I've leaned towards not basing them, mainly because of laziness and also because I don't think I have enough cork board to finish all the bases. Also, since I don't believe there's actually a designated base for the attack bikes I'll probably leave them all unbased so they look uniform.

Thanks whale. Although most people only use the AB for basecoating, I think they're using it to only a fraction of it's potential (assuming it's double action). You should definitely try doing more with it. Sending out the DA bits won't be a problem, are you in the CONUS? PM me your details.

OH-I Wanna get out of here

I did get a nicer brush (Masters G44) that MajorTom recommended, but now need to get a compressor with a tank for more consistent airflow. Your blog and his were the ones that really blew my mind with the detail you can get out of them and with the details that would be hard pressed to replicate with a brush. I really like the results I've got so far, defiantly the next step in my painting evolution so to speak.

Hey Egg, I've got a question about your Campbell Hausfeld 3-gallon compressor... you said its really loud, but is it still loud if you run it off of the charged air pressure? (instead of turning it on and using it that way)

Thanks EC! I keep on going back to your blog this week just to see that one big army picture you have. Hope to build my BA army to that size or maybe something close to that size one day! No worrying on copying stuff, one of the reasons I post things up here and I've copied many ideas from others as well

Alfndrate wrote:Hey Egg, I've got a question about your Campbell Hausfeld 3-gallon compressor... you said its really loud, but is it still loud if you run it off of the charged air pressure? (instead of turning it on and using it that way)

Hey Alf! The noise from a compressor is always in reference to the motor that compresses the air. When using just the tank and the motor isn't running there's no sound at all except the whooshing sound the airbrush makes when shooting air/paint. It's only when turning the motor on to charge up the tank when crazy noise starts.

Also, I read what happened to it in the IC forum...sucks. I would've went ballistic if cleaning people threw out my stuff like that. Were you able to make a successful dumpster dive to reclaim the models?

No :-/ I've been keeping my eye out, the dumpsters have been picked up and cleaned :(... I'm hoping they'll show up... I might buy a box of sanguinary guard and finish them before the month is out to complete the progress challenge for the month, and then switch to my IG :-/

Well, I am Eggy's 'baby' when it comes to AB. He is an extremely huge part of the reason I got into it, and now I can't imagine going back! Definitely should be sponsored by some AB company somewhere with the sales I am sure he has single handedly generated...

That being said, I am getting a hankerin to see you tackle something other than red Eggy... perhaps a super dirty Baneblade, or an aquilla lander or some other FW type thingie you could work into your army theme as an ally? Red is a very punishing color I find, as it sits right in the middle tone wise and is ultra saturated... Would love to see something with big surfaces, light or dark from you! Just a thought!

WM reminds me to say thanks again Shane for the inspiration

Actually I don't know if the big airbrush companies will want to sponsor me since I've been using the Veda ebay brush most of the time and have been very satisfied with the results. I haven't even started using the infinity yet! Been very impressed with the chinese AB.

Funny you should mention that I paint something else. Been on the fence about another army that wasn't space marines and I just bought a shoebox full of orks today. I think there's over 100+ units in there easily...no vehicles though except a few deff copters. I'll have to pick up some truks and battle wagons later when I start up the army. Thinking about doing a badmoon theme since I really like the yellow and green colour combo. Will be awhile before I get to them though.

I have the same breakdown of SG and DC boxes as Eggroll, the sprues are filled with wonderful nick nacks.

Thanks AustonT!

Finished off the rest of the bike riders this afternoon. Managed to clear off my desk and get the whole army together for some pictures.

It's been a little over 1 year now since I decided to start collecting and painting blood angels. Still have plenty of models left to paint - 2 baal preds, 2 preds, 1 razorback, 1 land raider crusader/redeemer, scouts, vanguard/sternguard vets, 3+ squads of terminators, 1 stormraven, and a ton of other troops. By this time next year I doubt all the models will fit on my desk.

Took a surprisingly long time to get everything out of the display case and setup on the desk. I'm just glad I don't have to play with these guys as there are a ton of models now to setup. Anyway, here are the pics:
