Hello Dakka,

I have been on a bit of a lull lately with my hobbying, and have recently found new passion and motivation through the new Chaos Dex and the Dark Vengeance Starter set.

For these reasons, I have decided to start a Chaos Marine army - focusing on the Black Legion.

Why Black Legion? Well, two reasons really:
1. I have 5 termies painted up as black legion from about 10 years ago (back when they used to be metal)
2. I like the idea of adding Ezekyle to my list (as Ezekyle, not a 'counts as')

So, for starters - I've have the following:
1. 5 Terminators
2. The DV box set
3. The CSM battleforce

I figure this should set me up for the core of my army.

As this blog progresses, I hope to add army lists, fluff, painting pics, battle reports etc, so I can share my experiences with Dakka and Dakka can chime in to suggest/comment as they like

So now - onto the army list building (and the modelling)

feel free to suggest what a 1k army list could look like, and what your next purchases would be.

Subbed, as a fellow Black Legion player I cant wait to see your stuff.

Every Dakkanaught gets a 4+ Pinch of Salt save.
When you suffer a Falling Sky hit, roll a D6 - on a 4+ the hit is ignored as per the Pinch of Salt save. On a 1-3 panic insues - you automatically fail common sense tests for the next 2 weeks and get +7 to your negativity stat. -Praxiss

Thanks Deathshead420 - Hopefully it won't disappoint

And now - introducing the first mariner of the warband, Champion Dek - with Power sword and combi plasma

I've deliberately kept this one simple to ease my way into things, but will hopefully see some more creative stuff as time goes on

Combi plasma still needs a bit of cleaning up, and base coat needs a clean up too...

Also need to drill out those barrels, but we do have our first marine! It can only go up from here

Ok, So I've also been doing some work on my DV stuff, and have 6 chosen and the lord assembled and armour painted

The armour has been done using a black base, a heavy Codex Grey Highlight, A light Skull White Highlight, and then shading using the old Shadow Black wash.

I was deliberately going for a 'darker' look to my armour, but think I may have gone too far as it's hard to see the highlighting unless you are under a bright light or outside... May have to rethink this one...

Let me know your thoughts/suggestions on painting black armour - Do you prefer the darker look? or do you prefer those plates to 'pop' with grey highlighting?

Blacks a hard one to do right. I think they look like they are off to a good start though.

Started trialling nmm gold on one of the Chosen (pics coming soon, promise!), but don't feel it's going very well so far.

I've also started working on my Plasma Gun marine - where I plan to have the plasma gun as a mutation rather than a separate weapon he's holding (let's hope I can pull it off!)

On a different note, I've put together my first list to trial out my legion:

Essentially it's the DV set plus:

5 Termies
MoS, Icon of Excess
Cannon, Combi flamer, combi melta, Chain fist, power fist, Power maul, 2 x power axes

8 marines in a rhino
1 plasma
Champ - combi plasma and pwr swd

Hopefully I'll get a game in over the next couple of weekends and I can report back

Ok, so lots more work - both experimenting with nmm gold trimming on a chosen and putting together my 8 man marine squad.

First of all the Chosen - I started out with brown on the trimming, followed by a brown wash:

I then followed up with Averland Sunset highlight, Yriel Yellow highlight, and a little bit of skull white - followed by another brown wash - and this was the result (somehow missed the in-between pics...):

I'm not completely happy with the result, but I'm not completely unhappy either - I think I'll let Dakka judge this one, but I'll probably have a go at blending from brown to yellow next (though this is likely to be harder...)

Also need to do a photo tutorial so I can give you guys better pics to judge!

I have also now put together the rest of Dek's marine squad, ready for cleaning, muzzle drilling and general tidying up:

You may notice the marine second from the left has a mutated plasma arm Needs a bit of greenstuff still but I think it works...

So let me know what you think of my evolving legion - more updates to come!

Ok, so I've tried the gold trim for the marines on another model now, and have taken some better photos - keen to know which style you prefer:

Outside the DarkTower, amongst the roses.

I would say for my tastes, somewhere in the middle of the two. I like the one on the left but it seems a little too muted, the one on the right seems a little to bright. Now I sound like Goldielocks....

I like the gold! I would agree that somewhere between the two would be best.

Will you be using the Abaddon model, or scratch building your own?

Thanks for the comments guys - I might try again and mix in less Shining Gold, see how that goes...

As far as Abaddon goes - I will be using a conversion of some sort. Not sure if I will base it on the Abaddon model or not at this stage, but obviously want it to be distinguishable from a generic Chaos Termy lord...

I haven't yet given much thought to how I will be constructing him yet - but would appreciate any suggestions.

I do at some stage have plans to kitbash a forgefiend with a Dreadknight to make a Dreadfiend (Forgeknight?) - I think a Chaosy/Demony looking Dreadknight with two Hades Autocannons would look great!

Anyways - any suggestions on Abaddon, DreadFiend or Armour trim (or anything else chaosy) are welcome

Outside the DarkTower, amongst the roses.

Well i have a metal Abaddon, I feel that he looks too small imo next to regular csm termies and tac marines. I even have him on a big stone base and it still easy to tell the scales a bit off. Its pretty easy to kitbash one from a termie champ box, i might remake mine.

Ok, some updates and better pics of my marines - 1 normal guy who thinks he's a big deal (left), my Champion with combi plasma and mutated power sword (centre) and my guy with mutated plasma gun (right)

Black armour is now done - time to start working on the gold trim

Let me know what you think so far.

Gotta work on your photography, they look a lot better in person - and black is hard at the best of times

I liked the left one right?

Keep'em coming! I might actually write up our battle report before the end of the year...
