This question is two fold: Suppose its Warhammer 30k and the heresy has begun, would you have sided with a traitor legion and if so why?

Second question: Knowing what we know now, certain traitors being elevated to Daemon princes and such; would you still do it?

My answer is... yeah I probably would have lol. On one hand you have the glory of dying for the Emperor, and on the other you may gain a certain level of interest from the ruinous powers and possibly live for eternity. (Kharn, Lucious, etc...)

I would side with the traitor legions, of course. Not sure if I would actually go full Chaos though, since you can still have just bad marines, not chaos marines. But, Tzeentch is pretty cool. Either way, screw the Imperium of Man, they can all burn. Traitor Legions ftw!

Loyalist all the way.
I find that the traitors are guided by selfish and petty reasons, none of which warrant betrayal.

Also, check out my history blog: Minimum Wage Historian, a fun place to check out history that often falls between the couch cushions.

Selfish? Sure... Petty? I wouldn't say that... The promise of great power, greater than what you could acheive as a loyalist is a pretty strong sales point lol.

I would definitly go with the traitors, but only with the alpha legion. Destroying humanity to save everything else, if I'm not mistaken about their lore.

Everything I say, barring quotes and researched information, is my personal opinion. Not fact.

1. I'd side with some of them like Mortarion because I like them as long as I don't know about Chaos.

2. If I knew about Chaos I'd side with people but shoot them in the back later. Say sorry to dead people I liked too.

Being as how both sides had daddy issues, I'd probably have gone traitor legion. Besides, everyone likes a cackling megalomaniac, right?

Assuming 30k with just 30k "in character" knowledge, I would go loyalist.
Looking at the worst possibilities of both sides, it's to die for the Emperor, the Imperium and to reunite mankind under one banner; or it's to die listening to the whispers from Erebus...

Assuming 40k and playe knowledge... Well, I am working on a GK army...

The Imperium more or less worked back then. The oppression and backwards thinking towards technology were much less impregnated in the society. I'd hardly side with any Traitor Primarch, unless if I was a Prospero citizen.

Um, it depends on a variety of factors. Am I just a neutral observer beforehand, without a dog in the fight? If so, I definitely side with the Big E.

Lots of legion menials and former inhabitants of the various Chaos Legions' homeworlds perceived their masters as being justified, or at the very least no worse than the 'loyalists.' If I were one of them, I'd probably have backed the home team.

I highly doubt I would turn Traitor, especially if I had any knowledge of the end result?

If had knowledge of actual Dark Gods, I would steer pretty clear of that. Immortality is not worth the loss of my humanity.

Nope, would have stayed loyal. Given how well the Great Crusade was going originally and the sheer awe that came from witnessing the Emperor as a mortal I highly doubt that the traitor's false promises of greater potential would sway me given how much the Emperor had already accomplished.

Pssht enjoy your celibacy and lifetime fighting for a tyrant, I'm gonna go join up with the Emperor's children and enjoy 10,000 years of crazy wild experiences. That's if I don't blow my own brains out with a blastmaster trying to get in the mood.

It depends on circumstances...

I am a student in Prospero -> traitor
I am a noble warrior in Ultramar -> loyal
I am recovering from my injuries in Olympia after twenty years of a trench-war in a world nobody heard about -> traitor
I am a freedom fighter from Deliverance -> loyal
I am stuck in Caliban while the Crusade rages, and the planet I love is being ravaged by the Imperium -> traitor

And so on.

The emperor is selfish and can't even do anything, I dislike the high lords of terra, and those Chaos gods are just weird.
