Right side of my jaw, near the back almost where my ear is, hurts when I try to bite down on food. I have trouble clenching my jaw, movement is reduced.

WebMD seems to think I have oral cancer and should immediately stop excessive cocaine use. However it also has a few reasonable things listed, one is a dental absess which I would figure I'd go see a dentist for. The others look like something I see the doctor for.

My throat might be a little swollen to, cant tell. Anyone else have problems jist like this? What was it? Who should I go see?.. because I only want to pay once.

I am the kinda ork that takes his own washing machine apart, puts new bearings in it, then puts it back together, and it still works.

It sounds more dental to me (as an ex medical student). Could be an impacted wisdom tooth causing inflammation.

stop biting your tongue.

but seriously if it doesnt go away by itself after a few weeks, go to a dentist,

probably just a cavity or grinding your teeth in sleep and straining muscles or something.

I though obama care solved this kind of thing... wtf, tax payers should never have to compromise on health like this.

It's quite a complicated area, it could be something like an ear infection, throat, teeth etc... I think there is a fairly good chance that whatever it is it's infected. So in either case you would be prescribed antibiotics or something. I think I would hedge my bets and go to the doctor first.

Working with dentists every day, (no, I'm not a dentist), I'd agree it could POSSIBLY be a wisdom tooth issue, but if you don't have wisdom teeth, a doctor would be better. Worst case, with a dentist, they can do a limited exam and an X-Ray of just that area, should be less than $100 total to find out what it is. And if it requires an extraction, that should be less than $100 as well. If its similar to what we charge, you'd be looking at the following *rough estimate!!*: $25 limited exam, $15 1 bitewing (X-Ray), $90 extraction. So...$130ish, if that's the problem. Hope that helps.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

On the off chance one of us has a clue what we're talking about, and they can get free suggestions?
On this one, I gave a bunch of "possibles" and "maybes", and I don't know anyone who works in a dental facility here, except for me. About the best I was able to do is give him a rough idea of cost to survey the area and how much an extraction would cost. I sure as hell am not equipped to give an online evaluation.

Any medical professionals would also be wary of giving out online advice beyond "go see your physician".

I didn't, the AMA (or your national equivalent, obliviously) plus litigation happy people did that. That and it is tough to diagnose online.

If it's an oral problem, I'd go to a dentist first. I've had more than one experience with a doctor refusing to even look at my problem and just dismissively telling me to go see a dentist. Not that I want to give another dentist a single thin dime for the rest of my life (seriously...probably one of the most corrupt professions on earth...) but if you're wanting help, that seems like your best bet.

I get this occasionally, usually a sprained muscle, it can last for 3-4 days, maybe up to a week. Best bet is to see a dentist/oral surgeon, their the mouth expert. If it's something they can't help you with, they'll tell you who can.

I'd say the low grade cocaine you are using is causing an inflamation or infection in your ear cavity. My suggestion would be to get better coke and stop putting it in your ear. IT GOES UP YOUR NOSE.

My last wisdom tooth was pulled in Kandahar. I thought I was going to have a week at Landstuhl, Germany. Imagine my shock when they whipped out instruments that seemed to date back to the Dark Ages. One day Quarters and lots of Percosets.

This post is for general informational purposes only; it should not and cannot be construed as professional advice.

One of the most common causes for pain at the joint between the jaw and the skull, aggravated by movement, is temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMD. The pain from this is often felt in front of, and above/below the ear, and/or localized in the 'hinge' of the joint. Additionally, there are a number of other issues that could cause similar pain, such as dental pathology (cavities, infections of the pulp, periodontal infections, grinding, etc. Again, it's impossible to narrow it down without assessing your overall health and oral condition, looking for swelling or infection, localizing the pain or running you through the movements of the jaw, etc- all things a practitioner can do in an exam to help make a diagnosis. Still, reading up on some of these issues will help you better understand what you might be looking at.

Most of the things that can make your jaw hurt are in the purview of a dentist, not a physician (the big exception here being an ear infection), and I suspect your best bet at this point would be to read up on some of those issues on webMD, call a few local dentists and ask about their fees for a first visit, including a detailed exam and, if needed, a panorex, then go with whichever one you feel best about.

So, reading through this thread makes me wonder exactly what Dakka considers to be reasonable advice. But what the hell, I can play this game, too.

I suggest buying a small rubber mallet and vigorously wacking yourself in the jaw for about half an hour each day just before meals or until your jaw goes numb. That should help with the pain. If after two weeks or so, the issue persists, then go to a chiropractor and see what his/her advice is.
