Is Calgar really that good to bring now? I'm not seeing his benefit besides getting to do one extra drill, and I don't think that's worth his price tag. I might be wrong, so please explain his usefulness to me. What kind of SM army is he suited for, pods?

he's great but only in big games of 1850+. Being able to dictate how your leadership rolls is very big, plus hes got an almost 100% chance to get the warlord trait you want with rerolls in a CA list. And to top it off he is a close combat beast that can really bring the pain if you put him in a now unkillable land raider with some of his Honor Guard buddies

The only guy who measures up as good or better for the smurfs is tiggy. And of all the chapter masters, the only two other really good ones (special characters) are azreal (dark angels), and perhaps vulkan he'stan or ko'sarro or w/e herpicus mcderpington of the white scars is.

Twiggy is not as impressive as people say. Lacking eternal warrior or Articifer armor hurts him. He's a magnet in every game I play him.

I won't blame him on never getting the spells I want, but he has never really panned out to be the bad ass I want him to be

So Calgar is even Bette with is honor gaurd? That's becoming a high point value and then adding in a lrc. Is it really worth that many points? I presume the terminator version is best?

Calgar's a wrecking ball on par with Lysander. His price tag keeps him out of regular games, but if you're doing a big honkin game I don't think I could ask for many better warlords.

Terminator armor isn't usually worth it on Calgar. He already has a 2+/4++ and unless you're doing a lot of deep striking to take advantage of his homer, I wouldn't bother. Keep it off him, that way he takes up less space in a vehicle and his unit can still sweeping advance.

Calgar can still sweeping advance in his Terminator Armour, it's special.

Heres how I see it.
You pay the points to lose his grenades so he's affected by terrain when alone and to give him deep strike and a homer. Is that worth it?

If you are assaulting him alone you are already messing up.

It is still not generally worth it because the only reason to give him the armour is to deepstrike him with a unit of termies, at which point none of them will have grenades, and they cannot Sweeping advance because the rest cannot SA. Or to run him with a unit in a LR as a reliable teleport beacon(remember the range goes off the Raider's hull while he is embarked)

The third option is to armour him up and them put him in a termie unit inside of a redeemer or a Crusader, then they can assault out with grenades, and a reliable homer in place for other termie units.

The real problem is if you are deepstriking him with a termie unit you lose out on his homer(unless you take an additional termie unit and hope he comes in first), and if you take him in another unit, you pretty much need to take a termie unit to justify the upgrade. So yeah the armour is horrible.

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.

Ok thanks for the feedback on the term armor. I usually play 1850-2k games. I just feel like after I take him, a land raider, and honor squad, a storm raven, and an imperial knight ...there's not much for anything else esp since I try to play competitive and need the staple 2 troops.
