I was pretty big into metal music in high school when big-named bands like Slayer, Megadeth, Metallica were peaking, but after high school I gained new musical interests, and it seemed like the metal music scene was in a waning period anyway, so I didn't keep up (was not even aware that Black Metal was even a thing until like 3 or 4 years ago).

Anyway, I'm sure I missed alot of good bands between those times and and now. Of the bands I have found out about, I think all of the ones I like are from Europe. Looking through my itunes, some newish bands I like have been Behemoth, Blood Red Throne, Electric Wizard, the Gorgoroth albums with Gaahl, Krisiun, Runemagick, Satyricon, and Vader.

Any recommendations for some good newer metal bands?

I'd check out Pantera, if you haven't already.

But also, Lamb of God, Mastodon, Sepultura, Soulfly are all pretty good (IMO)

As an XM listener, I've also picked up on Twelve Foot Ninja, Hellyeah, Kyng, Whitechapel, and Allagaeon.

Yeah, Pantera was also big in those days. I have all their albums, but never really got into them too much. Sepultura on the other hand...big fan of Beneath the Remains - Chaos AD.

My wife has XM in her car...what is the best station do you think for metal? I always end up on Ozzy's Boneyard or whatever its called.

My time to shine!

I'll hit a couple of subgenres, probably only a couple per post.

Folk metal exploded in the last decade with the likes of Ensiferum, Korpiklaani, Finntroll, Moonsorrow, and Аркона. I tend to dislike the more party flavored ones (though I still enjoy Finntroll a lot) and prefer the slower, more epic sound of Moonsorrow who are one of the best bands to emerge in the last decade period. I also like a lot of the "pagan black metal" acts that make some cinematic type music like Graveland. This song is synced really well with the video.

Going even more esoteric on the same branch, Nokturnal Mortum's The Voice of Steel is one my favorite albums ever made and is one of the things that steered me toward Space Wolves in 40k, awesome epic music that goes right with the army. Sort of a more black metal version of Moonsorrow.

Space Wolves: 3770
Orks: 3000
Chaos Daemons: 1750
Warriors of Chaos: 2000

I am pretty sure all the bold ones are too old to be post 2000. It is all bands I have known for quite a long time. Not sure for the others.

Seeing some of these bands listed reminded me of some others. But first, the record must be set straight... Linkin Park is NOT metal.... I know some people classify it as "Nu-Metal" but it's far more akin to Pop and techno than anything else. And if you haven't heard of Rammstein, or Linkin Park by now, you're Amish, or you're living in a cave

Anyhow:

Polkadot Cadaver
Ghost (aka Ghost BC in the US for an album)

Also perhaps a bit old for a "last decade" list but:

Lordi is a Finnish metal band; they may have formed in 1992, but they really got famous in 2006 when they were the first (and so far only) heavy metal band to win the Eurovision contest.

I am particularly partial to Blood Red Sandman, but Hard Rock Hallelujah is the song they won with.

Why not go back to the best? If you were only really exposed to the Thrash Metal stuff (Metallica, Megadeth ect) then Iron Maiden have been putting out great albums since they started, and their last one was 2010 and was awesome. Also, check out Heaven and Hell (90s, I think, a reformed Black Sabbath with Dio) and Saxon (Again, a little more classic, but still great.

If you haven't listened to them, Dream Theatre are also great. They go from Pink Floyd-esqe prog rock to Metallica-style metal over the course of an album, and are just generally a great band. Still active and have put out a couple of really good albums since 2000.

All that said, I still think nothing new has come even close to beating the 70s/80s eras of Sabbath and Maiden.

Yeah, I'm a fan of all the "classic" metal bands like Sabbath, Maiden, Priest, etc. But I'm not too familiar with their post-2000 output.

The only older band I really kept up with album-for-album over the years was Slayer.

I'll have to give the newer Maiden stuff another try. I've heard a couple post-Fear of the Dark songs, but nothing really grabbed me. Any particular albums from Maiden I should give a listen to?

I would suggest looking at Syslosis, they are one of my favourite bands and are relatively new. I was going to mention some other bands, but most were already mentioned.

Maiden's last two have been really good, actually. A Matter Of Life And Death (2007, I think) and The Final Frontier (2010). Both are in some ways a bit less heavy than the likes of Number of the Beast ect, but have some songs that I would term their 'epic' style, 5+ minutes with some very good instumental bits. Almost going into Prog-metal, but very much still Iron Maiden. Here's the best songs on each album:

A Matter of Life And Death:

The Longest Day
These Colours Don't Run
For The Greater Good of God
Brighter Than A Thousand Suns

The Final Frontier (I'd say this is one of their best albums, not a bad song on it):

The Final Frontier
The Isle of Avalon
El Dorado
Starblind
The Talisman
The Man Who Would Be King

Hope that gives you some ideas.

I love liquid metal, but I hate, hate and also hate the interviews they are doing like all the damn time. Just play music, dammit. I don't care about (insert 1 hit wonder band I never heard of here) and how great their new album is. When I'm driving, I want metal, and that's it.

I end up switching to Octane or Boneyard when LiquidMetal starts getting too talky. But I usually can't take much of the NuMetal or the really old stuff thats more rockish than metal.

Anyway.. the best thing about sirius is they turned me on to Volbeat. Prolly my favorite newish band.

Just thoughts of another one you might like: Maylene and the Sons of Disaster. They're kind of a strange mix between Souther Rock and Metal, but it works, and their last album, IV, has plenty of good tracks on it. Might not be your thing if you're after the REALLY heavy stuff, but it's certainly heavier than most rock bands.

This post will be about thrash metal.

Some bands that were badass in the 80s and early 90s went to meh quality or worse during the latter half of the decade for any number of reasons. But some of them bounded back in the past decade.

Remember Overkill? American thrash metal band that went through a groove metal phase for a while in the 90s? Well in 2010, they bound back with a monster of a comeback album in the form of Ironbound. They kept up the pace in 2012 with The Electric Age and are due for another album this year.

Staying on thrash combacks, Kreator went through some weird experimental phase in the 90s after Coma of Souls but returned to more genuine sounding thrash in 2001 with Violent Revolution albeit with a more melodic tinge and have been sticking with that style since then.

While we're talking about thrash, there's one newer band that everyone should know: Vektor. Just listen:

Here's some Canadian Metal, eh?

Check out 3 Inches of Blood.

Bison (sometimes called Bison BC)

And Strapping Young Lad. I really can't recommend these guys enough, everything about them is great and they include members of Death and Fear Factory.

These guys all kick butt live. Major butt.

So here are some of my picks in video.....

Bleed by Meshuggah
This is the song/video that got me into them. I just can't say enough positive things about them. And you just can't compete with guys that play 8 string guitars!!!

Same Old Song by PAIN
This was the song and band/guy that introduced me to "Scandinavian" metal....if you know anything about the history of rock and metal in the US, Peter T (the founder/singer/guitarist) is like the "Rick Rubin" of the European metal scene. If you check out some of their other videos, you'll notice that he has quite the sense of humor sometimes!

Dull Boy by Mudvayne
I honestly can't think of any song by Mudvayne that I don't like. This is perhaps my all time favorite (though their remake of "King of Pain" is awesome and may be tied for #1 !) They've been around for years, but really hit their stride in the 2000's.

Iron Swan by The Sword
This band just has a...classic metal...feel to them. Perhaps its the album artwork....the intro....the crunchy guitar.....I just don't know...but I do know that I just really am digging on them. Check out "Veil of Isis" too.

Take My Bones Away by Baroness
Just good old fashioned, hard charging kickass metal rock! For something a little "darker" or "thrash-ier" check out "A Horse Called Golgotha".

That is probably enough for this post, but I urge you to especially check out: Soilwork and Mastodon. They are both wonderful!
