WASHINGTON – Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper’s awkward attempt to patch things up with his state’s sheriffs over his support of controversial gun control legislation isn’t going as planned.

The governor, a Democrat, offered a series of unusual explanations during a meeting he held last Friday with a group of Colorado sheriffs for why he signed legislation that restricts the sale of ammunition magazines of more than 15 rounds.

First, Hickenlooper blamed his staff for not anticipating the opposition on gun control. He then apologized for his staff’s inability to effectively communicate and promised to do better in the future.

When Larimer County Sheriff Justin Smith pressed the issue, Hickenlooper snapped back, “What the f---? I apologized!”

He apparently was kidding around, as the sheriffs could be heard laughing. But on his Facebook page, Smith said he was surprised by the governor’s choice of words.

“I’m a big boy and I won’t pretend for a moment that it’s not language that’s foreign to me – but I found that type of attitude and response to be well below the dignity of the office of governor,” Smith wrote. “This was a sitting governor, in a public meeting, responding to another elected official.”

Hickenlooper also said he felt pressure to sign the bill into law because a member of his staff “made a commitment.”

“To be honest, no one in our office thought it would get through the legislature,” he said. “There were several Democrats who said without question they weren’t going to vote for it.”

The measure passed the Democrat-controlled legislature. No Republicans voted for it.

Last year, Hickenlooper spoke in favor of gun-control measures that called for background checks for all firearm sales as well as transfers.

After a group of gun control bills were signed into law earlier this year, 55 of the state’s 62 elected sheriffs filed a federal lawsuit against the state, claiming the regulations violated the Second Amendment. The judge ruled the sheriffs could not sue the state while in office but did say they could once their terms ended.

Colorado has been very aggressive in pushing through gun control measures. The passage of three gun bills by the state legislature last year led to the ousting of two Democratic state senators – former Senate President John Morse and Angela Giron. Both were replaced by Republicans.

Somewhat a peek into how those laws passed in Colorado. Still though I do not think the fall out from those law are done

I'm all in favor of the people of the state rising up to do this sort of thing...but I've heard that in this case it's been documented that the strong reaction was provoked, funded, and directed by Republican groups from outside the state.

Any truth to that?

So if one cant sell magazines with more than 15 rounds, then how can someone buy magazines for weapons like the M4 or M16 which use the STANAG magazines?
Its just going to encourage black market sale of magazines.

Also an assault rifle will look just silly with a 10 or 15 round mag.

I have a 4 round magazine for mine. Have to in order to hunt with it. Thing was damn expensive though.

They make magazines of all sizes. I don't own one for more then 10 rounds for my rifle. I'll be changing that soon though, cause I don't like having to change magazines every few seconds when I go out fun shooting.

Sigh. Hickenlooper apologised for not speaking with the sheriffs before he signed the bill, not for the actual bill itself. Junk article, crappy reporting, happily spammed to dakka because it met the bias of a certain group of dakkaites. I'm shocked that such a thing would happen.

Oh well, I guess this is kind of more interesting that when it was just the constant spamming of junk articles to the Obamacare thread.

Are you not at freaking Campbell?..if a LEO worry you can attach those mags or stash those mags in a ammo pouch. That's attach to a "H" harness to go over your IOTV.

yes it looks redonkulous... costs extra to put a limiting device in the mags too.

And I'm not going to be wearing an IOTV while sitting in a tree stand... that's loving my gear a little to much.

For many people it is still a live issue, especially given continued attempts to curtail the right to bear arms. But if you feel that it isn't a topic you wish to discuss there are many other threads you may wish to contribute to otherwise. That way you are not forced to discuss the topic, and those who do wish to discuss it may continue to do so.
