Hey guys

I'm very interested in getting into Infinity but I just cannot figure out for the life of me which army to go for. It's not like 40k where I only like Tau. It's not like WFB where I only like Dwarfs. Even things like Warmachine, only one or two types appeal to me.

But I browse the Infinity site and, you know, they are all so cool looking.

It's a conundrum

Can anyone offer any advice over a good army to learn with, and why? At this point (as a painter more than a player), I'm going to be happy with any range of minis.

Thanks!

Yeah that's kinda my problem.

I like 'em all.

Well, you could proxy the models play a few 150 points games and try out the factions and see which playstyle/ abilities you like the most.

You don't even have to think in terms of "factions". Take a look at the official Infinity Army Builder program and take note of the Sectorials.

If there's a theme or idea that you might like, then go through and try making a small list and post it up here.

Though seriously, you must like 1 faction somewhat more than the other faction, even if you think they're all great.

Well if you REALLY cant choose, here is another way of looking at it. With what tech do you like to play with? No tech=Ariadna,
Low Tech=Haqq, Medium tech but fancy=PANO, Yu, Ultra High Tech=Aleph Infowars=Nomads, and Alien Tech=Tohaa and CA

Do you enjoy playing with a certain type of tech/theme?

What was it the Cheshire Cat said to Alice,

Alice: "Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?"
Cat: "That depends a good deal on where you want to get to,"
Alice: "I don't much care where –"
Cat: "Then it doesn't matter which way you go."

If you like them all, any will do, and the cost is sufficiently low (relatively speaking) that you can and probably will get a second faction in the future. I would recommend a starter box though, they are generally nice deals. Maybe choose your first faction from among those.

Note new Pan-O and Nomad boxes are coming out in a few months-- like next month we will see them-- first in game starter box (called Operation:Icestorm) and then as individual boxes a few months. Maybe that will work for you?

The big difference is in Pan-O which has a lot of TAGs compared to the other factions. So if you like big giant robots...

As you're a painter, I expect you to post pix of your painted minis for us all to see.

I assume this means some kind of starter box with rules and minis? that would be nice, it's something I havent currently seen - does this mean there's a new ruleset due (3?). Pan-O do seem quite nice aswell And robots? Well, I do play Tau...

I'm sure I'll get some minis up at some point

thanks, all.

Yes, a starter box. Here are some posts about it http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/9570/356404.page We should start seeing more concrete details this coming week, and it is supposed to make a real world appearance at a big event in Vigo, Spain an the Inter-planetary something or the other at the end of July. Do follow along in the N&R thread I linked to, and ignore the angry people. (Well, person. I expect the Mods will sort that one out soon enough.)

There is a new rulebook coming before the end of the year. We're calling it N3 instead of 3rd ed though. The new rules will still be a free download, like they are now, but I intend to get the book because It'll be a nice book and has updated art and of course the background info etc...

Pan-O is my suggestion.

They're the closest you get to Tau in this game, using superior guns and technology (read: TAGs, Heavy Infantry, high accuracy, Invisibility), they're very powerful and relatively straightforward to use, and the new Neoterra starter box is beautiful and the best points for $ you'll find in the game (220 points or so)

I picked nomads right off the bat. I really liked the look of the models and the play style.

If you like all of the models, do some research on factions play styles and fluff. If you like all of them but like the idea of heavy infantry, going Nomad or Haqqislam will be a bit disappointing.

nomads felt a bit like dark eldar to me, I found myself putting them all ass to the wall. haqqislam has some decent models, however.

Every time someone compares Tau to PanOceania, Martin kills a Stark (what's left of them :p ).

PanOceania is more "honourable" and it does hold advantage in the straightforward duels, however due to the critical dynamic, it is often better to go with camouflage (first strike, often on infiltrator with mines for additional havoc) or sending cheap sacrificial grunts (warband or something like koalas). Infinity rewards unfair exchanges.

TAG and HI also aren't something I'd recommend. I know infinity community loves feeding you the mantra "everything goes", however that is honestly only half true. Double combat group will get you further, unless you play something like YAMS, which I avoid like the plague.

Also avoid NCA box. ASA or MO starter would be better for first hand experience. NCA is rather bad, you want Fusiliers, Auxilia, Deva, then you can add something more fancy like Swiss or Bolts.

Since you're a painter first, why not simply get a model or two and then go from there? Otherwise go with Nomads, it's hard to make a bad list with them.

See I've had the opposite experience. When I've tried going for more than one combat group with cheaper units, I've just been disappointed that they don't have the durability or killing power of some of the more expensive units I could bring.

Which is the awesome thing about Infinity. Everything does go. it just depends what works for you.

pan o are like tau.

Martin can kill off all of the starks and feed them to dragons for all I care. :p

Yu-jing can keep their honour - PanO is good at shooting. That's pretty much it.

If you want infiltrators, DO NOT play neoterra. They have none.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

That's the spirit.

Single combat group, not any more, not even going to argue. Simply, play more ITS (non-annihilation) against opponents with double group (16+ orders).

Once you go double group, its hard to go back to single.

But then you see your entire second group die uselessly against one elite model, and it becomes hard to choose.

So... the dwarf attitude in me is definetly being drawn to... Ariadna.

It seems kinda fun, to play the total tech underdog.

I'm not arguing either. I'm simply saying double combat groups of sub par units doesn't work for me. I never said or even implied it doesn't work for you or won't work for others..

If they work for you, great! Have a blast. But telling a new player that it's the only way to play isn't the best way to encourage entering the game. You don't know their opponents, the mission types they play, whether they want to play ITS, their competitive level, etc. So telling someone that what works for you in your environment against your opponents is the only way to play is pretty disingenuous. Infinity really is a game where everything does go - so encourage new players to start and let them find what works for them.

40k also doesn't have any problems by that reasoning. The rules are just a framework. Just make something up, if you don't like it.

Yes, I do hope Infinity and N3 pushes for more standardised play, currently you have Paradiso and ITS. Every community playing their own version is simply BS, as it kills any sort of debate from the start and makes evaluation of the game and any kind of starting framework impossible.

One of the reasons I picked Nomads was the outsider aspect to their background (and I could play an all stealth army with good looking models ) - Ariadna was a close second for being the only other underdog faction, and also having very nice looking models.

I've not played a single game of infinity yet, and I already have a 200pt Ariadna army, a 200pt Nomad army, some mercs, some Yu Jing (with an army in the works) and I'm looking at Haqqislam, Aleph, and Morats. And I'm probably gonna get operation icestorm so I'll have PanO too. It's addictive. -.-

Just starting myself and already have a 300pt Ariadna army split into two teams. Eventually I want to get that big mercenary TAG (salamander ??) And try that. Tahoa will be my next army.
