I have decided to take the plunge into a new warhammer 40k army. I want to do Necron because I like the way some of the models look. Typically for me though, I tend to make my lists based off what models look the coolest in each FOC selection and in typical GW fashon that usually means a very non-competitive list.
I did it with Marines and I did it with Dark Eldar and lost often. With this next army, I would like to remain competitive while still selecting the models I feel are going to look the coolest on the board.
The three models I really like the look of are the Triarchs, Spyders, szeras and the CCB
Can these guys be competitive together in a list? How would you do it? Still unsure for what FA to take.
You don't really want to mix roles with your army, so for me spiders with illiminor szeras is not a good mix of synergy. Illiminor is a shooting buff, or if you're unlucky a strength bonus.
Catacomb command barges are useful and are downright great in low point games.
Ok well a couple of cool things, triarch stalkers can be a great unit to have in your necron army because it makes everything in your army twinlinked if the stalker hits.
When I get off work I will try to write a list keeping in mind your models you like.
I mean I haven't ever seen it in other "competitive" lists, but a 20 man warrior squad backed up by illiminor (hopefully giving bs 5 or tough 5) and a ghost arch(to spawn more warriors) and a triarch stalker(bestowing twin linked) could be awesome.
That being said I think the more common and effective choice would be the overlord in the barge with a warsythe. Av13 chariot with jink, 1+ amor save for rider, warsythe sweep attacks, it's a lot to love.
You can't put anything other than a Vannilla Overlord in a CCB. It seems like a very competitive unit. Scarab farm, with three units of 3 Spyders spawning onto scarabs looks like it would be very competitive in 7th (with everything scoring and the propensity of crappy little tanks to multi charge).
The great thing about Necrons is that you can kitbash like crazy. For instance if you love Szeras, kitbash your own guy like that but make him a cryptek of a more useful build to your style of play. Lots of different ways of playing Necrons. Flyer heavy, tank-based infantry, swarming canopteks even a list based around the remnants of an ancient god....
Do NOT take the triarch praetorians. They're way to much points for there stats even though they look good. Unless you put them in a night scythe, they're useless to you. Szeras is also useless unless you use use immortals for the backbone of your army which I highly recommend. Put the immortals with carbines and you've got the necron equivalent of a riot force. Then you can laugh at tyranids and orks.
20 warriors gains more from the illiminor buff if you are intent on taking him. Also in maelstrom of war missions there aren't many tougher troop options, especially with ghost arch support. Warriors do it all and they do it cheaper and more effectively than immortals. That unit can march up the field with impunity, make it even better with a phaeron overlord for relentless assualt after rapid fire and 2+, 3++ tanking damage with 20 spare wounds just in case, devestating.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Not to mention that throwing away warrior wounds allows you to effectively move further since you can place your casualties anywhere within unit coherency.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Even those re spawned by ghost arch and not reanimation.

Warriors footslogging v bad in any kind of maelstrom game.
Best thing with Illuminor Szeras is to use him to kitbash your own cryptek.
Same with Triarch Praetorians. Great basis for cryptek kit bashing. Stormteks great. Despairteks great situationally (with Deathmarks especially in a night scythe). Destrukteks v good situationally.

Qualified agree. Note that per the wording, you can only control one objective with a blob. However, you can *contest* as many as you can reach and a blob has a huge footprint.
Personally, I'd take a blob, it gives centre board control like nothing else Crons have.

Hell no, why spend the money on illuminor? Just use warriors with deathmark or praetorian heads plus the bits from the Preatorian box as you say.

Don't waste points on a sep weave and command barge, it's redundant as chariots give the rider +1 to their armor save. Instead take a warsythe for gods sake and if you can find the points mind shackle scarabs.
Sweep attacks are at modified riders strength and ap. The warsythe gives you strength 7 ap 2 armorbane vs strength 5 ap - with an overlords standard attacks. I can't stress enough how much of a must take a warsythe is on a command barge.
Further I really recommend finding the points for mind shackle scarabs, they really help in cc as they let you potentially nullify your lack of initiative and just maybe let you laugh and say "stop hitting yourself" as your enemies warlord punches himself to death.
