Hey mates simple question for you. Me and a group of friends where playing again today and after beating one of my friends IG army with my Drop Podding SoT list (Still working on it), we got into a debate on why I take a Stormraven instead of a Stormtalon for my flyer. His argument is that not only is the Stormtalon Cheaper, but is an effective Anit-Air unit with the Sky-Hammer Missiles to give me a better chance, but I can admit I like the Stormraven as it is a lot more survivable, and if I recall, the Stormtalon only has 2x Hull-Points which isn't great.. We mentioned the Fire-Raptor and the Stormeagle from Forgeworld, but not many people run them despite them being pretty good, and I am liking the look of the Fire-Raptor a lot w/the Bolt Cannon and the 2x Side Sponsor Twin-Linked Autocannons.. Anyways, which flyer do you prefer to use, how do you use them, and how well have they done for you.

Looks-wise, I prefer the Storm Eagle and Fire Raptor from FW to the stormtalon and drizzle-pigeon.

Ruleswise I have no preference since to me, FW exists solely as a company that produces models (I don't play the game that their rules use).

Well, the stormtalon is a budget version of the Raven really. Given the 7th pen chart, you're probably better off with a Raven as it's harder to pierce and harder to kill in general while it sports the same main gun(TL AC), can add TL MM(great for taking down.. anything really) and also can always get some infantry-killing power with those sponson hurricanes. Combine it with the cargo capacity, machine spirit and it being assault and you have some nice swiss army knife flyer that can hold it's own against flyers while still being able to hurt ground targets. Otherwise you can go for twin talons but remember that they die twice as easily and even snapshooting ground units can hurt them badly.

Looks-wise, Fire Raptor every day. Effectiveness-wise, probably also a Fire Raptor, it's an out-and-out gunship rather than a gun-loaded-transport (Storm Raven/Eagle) or a flying Land Speeder (Stormtalon). The independent targeting on the sponsons is also pretty cool.

I prefer the Stormraven as it's tougher than the Stormtalon and has things like Power of the Machine Spirit and it makes me smile sometimes.
Sadly in the few games I've used it in its only come in toward the end of the game so it hasn't helped much.

Stormtalon, all the way.

For the price of a Raven with Hurricanes, you can have 2 Talons with Skyhammers.

2 targets are better than one. That's twice as many assault cannons, and 6 st7 missiles. With 1 bombing tanks being more difficult with the damage table, taking HP's is more effective.

3 Storm Talons
1 Storm Raven with MOTF repairing on 3+
All with IWND from Iron Hands

But I answered Stormraven

edit:: Everyone forgets Stormstrike missiles. They are basically 4 lascannon shots because of their AP2 with 72" range. Everyone forgets about them, and they are soooo good for anti fliers.

Resin Printer (minaitures) is a 4K printer with one of the largest build volumes available for a resin printer (192mm x 120mm x 245mm) with an amazing .01mm resolution! This professional printer is one of the best resin printers on the market!

FDM Printer (terrain) also has one of the largest build volumes available for an FDM printer (400mm x 400mm x 450mm) and has an amazing ,05mm build accuracy.

Storm Eagle with rockets leaves the others in the dust, except maybe the Fire Raptor.

But then, I'm not a Marines player.

Thats what caught my eye on the Fire-Raptor as well. Lots of devastating firepower both effective against both infantry and vehicles, as well as other flyers. However I can say I am surprised by how many people like the Stormtalon. Granted its cheaper but I avoid it due to the fact that it dies way to easily and it has only 2x Hull Points, where as the Stormraven and the other Forgeworld Flyers have 4x.

Yeah, only 2 HP - but that's why you take more of them!

I well shot lascannon will down a Talon or a Raven with a 4+ then a 6. Multiple targets reign supreme.

Well, I think both flyers have their role in an SM army,
the Stormtalon for hunting down flyers and the Stormraven also for transporting a deadly cc unit.

I much prefer the looks of the stormtalon, the stormraven looks like a flying dumpster.

I prefer the Stormeagle. It looks airworthy without being an flying box, unlike the regular SM flyers. The Stormtalon also has a good killing power for its 105pt cost.

The Stormeagle is a good flyer, however if I where to get one I would get the Roc-Pattern one. Comes with 4x S8 AP3 Twin-Linked Missles and 2x Lascannons on top of carring 14x models. But it is 295 points so it is expensive to run, which is the only downside.

Saying that, in my case I am running a Drop Pod List using the SoT book, and so far I have tried out the Stormraven with some success but Im still debating on if I should swap it out for something else. Which flyer in your opinion is a better fit for a Drop Pod list?

A twinlinked multimelta that you can put anywhere on the board? Alongside a tl assault cannon/lascannon? Extra 1hp and immune to melta? The option to transport a squad and a dread? The only transport a dread can charge from? 4 missiles extra to boot? Being able to zoom up and fire the multimelta, assault cannon and missiles at a target, then if they have weak rear armour (and not on board edge), have the option to drop into hover, move forward, do a 180, sending a mm into 1 target and 2 missiles and an ac into another. Reasonable chance to kill 3 targets and decapitate the opponents mech.

All for 75pts more than a skyhammer talon?

I'm another partisan for the 'Raven. It's a great way to deliver Terminators wherever you want them. You can mix and match weapons to maximize its anti-air, -vehicle, or -infantry capability, and you can tack on hurricane bolters if you want some "flying LRC" action. And personally I think the flying dumpster aesthetic works, and complements the overall Marine look.

The Stomraven is the most fun to play with (being a transport and all), but the other too are more effective in practice.

I prefer the storm talon to the stormraven because it doesn't look like a brick with bricks stuck on the side which we are to believe to be "wings" and forces use to make us to say it's a "flyer" rather than a brick that just fails to make an impression that it's a "flyer".

Stormraven.

I think the Stormtalon is hands-down the most rubbish model currently in production by GW. I'd love to have one in my army, (or a small fleet of them!) but I absolutely refuse to field those awful, awful models.
