It might sound silly, but are Iron Hands (or their successors, I suppose) likely to replace their hand with a gun/sword/other or fuse a limb to a gun/sword/other? I might be thinking of an entirely different universe and/or game system, but I'm sure they have.

If I sound like I'm being a condescending butthole, I'm not. Read my reply as neutrally as possible, please and thank you.

The Iron Hand conversion kit actually has a fused bolter to a hand. Pretty cool I must say

Oh, right, we're talking about the Imperium here.

Yes of course. The Imperium, home of the weak and the decadent. What the Imperium doesn't know of course is that the fifth Chaos god...lies inside the Emperor himself. Humanity is running out of time

Look, hard-fused weapons are stupid when a hand can hold a weapon and fire it.

Imma fuse a bolter to my right hand and a sword in the other so that way the grenades I have can stay uselessly on my belt

My fused weapon guys are going to be in Termy armour.
No grenades then.
And only one hand is fused anyway.

You could fuse the weapons to your hand if you're a dedicated combat engine of some kind, like a tank or a servitor.

If you're expected to perform any tasks outside of combat, however, you'll be in trouble.

Having the bolter fused to your hand would make it very difficult to clean it...

Actually guys, Their bionic bolter hands can be removed and replaced with their normal bionic hands when out of combat. Then when they go back in a servitor reattaches the bolter hand again.

Wait, this makes far too much sense. Are you still talking about 40k?

What would be the positive to essentially having your gun welded to your hand? You'd struggle to reload.

why not just fuse it to your arm and leave your hand free for...like another bolter or something

I dont get why anyone would want a gun instead of a hand. A hand can not only hold a gun but it can hold other things too. It even makes it easier to reload the gun.

All in favour of taking this to the logical extreme of fusing bolters everywhere say aye.

Why do tanks have their guns build in instead of being held by gigantic mechanical claws?

Because it's easier to integrate with electronic systems that way, and is also more structurally sound.

Great, now I can't get the image of a boltgun made of boltguns shooting boltguns being fused to a giant boltgun fused to the body of an iron hands marine out of my head

Because infantry and vehicles have different needs? A tank doesn't need hands to reload it's gun. A tank doesn't need to throw grenades, open doors and punch things. A tank doesn't need to perform maintenance or push buttons. Infantry do and replacing your hand with a Boltgun is... pointless.

You know the moment you fuse weapons to your hands your nose will start to itch.

Ask yourself: have you rated a gallery image today?

Tanks DO reload their guns (well, the crew does, but it's not like the gun never needs reloading). It's just a different system.

Tanks don't need to throw grenades, true. Iron Hands have two hands, also true.

Tanks make their own doors, much like Marines.

Tanks punch things with the front end of the tank, much like a Marine with a boltgun would hit them with their boltgun.

If you replace the boltgun with your hand, you can go back to performing maintenance with your hands.

Tanks have their guns built in instead of being held by gigantic mechanical claws because we don't currently have the technology to build said claws in such a way as for them to be effective. :p

However, there are several vehicles that have interchangeable weapon mounts, which are the vehicular equivalent, and it has been noted in many a sci fi that giant robots with hands are more effective than ones with hardwired weaponry (especially Macross, where a battroid valkyrie is always more effective than a destroid, despite the destroid's theoretically greater firepower).

Many a scifi novel or future vision has come to the conclusion that humanoid (not necessarily 100% indistinguishable from a human) robots is the way to go. Why? Because they can walk into the buildings we have, use any tool we made for ourself, operate any vehicle we made. Why make all those roles separate when one robot could handle it all for you?

A combat robot would probably be a bit more specialized, but it should still be capable of entering houses because that's where humans often live.

We need a tank that can do all of those things. It would be an entirely new level of awesome.
