You are pretty dead set on your unit being able to pay perfect attention to everything going on during the battle. Fliers move crazy fast. Units are thrown off guard so much by someone running at them that they can only snap fire. So that is moving an average of 7 inches. a 7 inch move is enough to catch your dudes by surprise so they have to snap fire.
How crazy would something moving 3-5 times that fast catch your unit off guard?

Forge a narrative with the building/ruins. The FMC/drake jacks up the building and part of it breaks down onto your unit causing a hit.

You might as well ask why an FMC can't vector strike a unit that vector struck it. They are both flying, both know each other is there apparently.
