Black templars crusader squads. Why? Rhino, drop pod
and land raider crusaders as dedicated transport and the unit can be 20man big if you want to footslog.

The first two replies didn't answer my question. I meant the type of troop not the specific unit

Ok... a unit that can be shooty, fight decent in close combat and have access to transport. Thats what you ment?

I think jack of all trades is what you want.
Farsight Enclave Crisis suits are the best troops choice in the meta right now.
I'd like to see any other troops unit give them a run for their money.

Best troop unit in the game is 3-man Windrider Jetbikes. Hands down. Now as for the type, nothing matters except mobility. The ones that can redeploy fastest, either due to their own speed or the speed of their DTs, are the best troops in Maelstrom of War missions. Secondary important characeristic that's often on the opposite spectrum of the first, is durability. If your troops aren't mobile, at least make them durable, or vice versa.
Your original question is impossible to answer, because in a competitive setting, the game doesn't care whether your troops are multi-purpose or jack-of-all-trades type, all it cares about is mobility and durability.
