Curious if anyone has tried SAGA. I've been looking at it and thinking it might be fun. Just wondering what other's impressions are/what's unique about it.

It is an absolutely amazing game.
We just started playing it at my local club and it is going down a storm. Properly easy to get your head around and most importantly, working out spur of the moment lists for pick up games is stupidly easy.
If you do go for it invest in the gripping beast plastics (esp their generic unarmoured dark ages warriors) for your warriors and levies. Your wallet will thank me for that bit of advice.
I've started writing bits about it on my blog but there is another blog you definitely have to read;

I have the rules and a mostly build Anglo-Dane list but no one to play against. We play a bunch of games and don't have a lot of time so never really got rolling. I kind of liked the rules and we got in one or two games using Ork-vikings vs Anglo-Eldar. Wasn't hard to pick up.

Great game!
Very easy to pick up the rules but very difficult to master, I got absolutely hammered by seasoned players in my first few games! Really like the mechanics.
Very cheap to play as well as Whitehorn has mentioned, especially if you use the Gripping Beast or Wargames Factory plastic boxsets.

One of my favorite games - cheap, historically accurate, easy to learn but hard to master rules, and just a generally fun game to play over a beer and pretzels.
I have Vikings and Normans. Have played lots of games with both, been in two tourneys, and have won best painted with the Vikings. Always fun, have never played against a power gamer (sort of not possible with the points setup), everyone who plays just wants to have fun.
If you want some nice cheap minis, look into Black Tree Designs USA. they often have sales, and once a year offer 50% off. I spent $85 last year on a 5pt army.

It uses some interesting design mechanics such as a battleboard to determine actions, so it is a fairly unique gaming experience.

There's a group of people who play it every month the next city over from me. It's fun and the only reason I'm not a regular participant is that I've got too many other projects going that I'm not willing to bump for 28mm dark ages. It was a close decision though, as the game is really, really solid.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better. |

The Crusades-era stand-alone expansion, The Crescent and the Cross, should be out soon. It was supposed to be out at Salute, but...
Currently, my understanding is that the French rulebook has gone to the printers. The English rulebook is still in limbo while they make sure the translation is just right.
