Earlier today I played a game with That guy. You know. THAT Guy. Every store has one.
The one with the smell similar to that of a great unclean one.
Whos willing to argue over the smallest rule to save that ONE gaurdsmen, but with go to any lengths to turn it around on you.
Who asks to see your codex with his nurgle blessed hands.
The guy who will try and cheat every chance he gets.
Who asks to hold your HQ who you put so much care painting, with his cheeto stained fingers. Yeah That Guy.
I'm interested, have you played a game with, That Guy? If so what is the story.
Are YOU That Guy?

I've never had to deal with that kind of 'That' guy. My kind of That guy is the kind that runs a local gaming club and insists that because he likes competitive 40k that it is a 40k club, not a wargaming club, and most of the games going on there end up being people practicing with their lists for their next tourney.

It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that. |

I generally only play with my private group of friends so haven't met a lot of other players but my group has a "that guy".
Personal hygiene isn't an issue but he is a massive rule stickler, at least when he thinks he can use the rules to save himself. He will conveniently forget them if he thinks it'll benefit from it.
Also he builds his armies around exploiting annoying rules or tries counter builds our lists. Back when Lords of War were becoming a thing in 6th we had a house rule of not using them. He was the first to break that rule with his ascended C'Tan (he still lost, haha).
Also whenever we are having a discussion about something that is more opinion based than black or white rules, he will ALWAYS argue the opposing side even if he knows nothing about it. IE. if we are talking about if we think X unit or X army is good or bad.

I played a couple games against a dude who would cheat if you didn't watch him. After a couple games I told him I wouldn't play him anymore because he would cheat if I didn't watch him
We don't play games together anymore. IIRC he had a pleasant fragrance.

I generally only play with friends but we still have a "that guy" in our group. He doesn't smell or anything, just argues over every single rule that he can and will cheat prolifically. Generally speaking we let him cheat a bit since if we didn't he wouldn't want to play with us and we're short on players.
Sucks but if people are willing to cheat in a randomly-determined game of toy soldiers, let them. Chances are they're not doing too well in the rest of their life anyway.

I hope I'm a good gamer, who when they doin't know some thing about an army will take it at face value what you tell me, and if i use some thing spcale I'll make sure the other play knows what i mean as i will show them the codex entery.
I shower and shave before (every time) I go to my club, I like those of us of the transgender players around the world have to put in 5 times more effort than the girls and they put in ten times the effort than guys. 90% of the time you will not find a TG/S that does not take pride in their appearance.
I know my last club have one, yah'no, That Guy. He was in fact the sexist and misogynistic guy as well. I knew it was going to be a bad move when I agreed to give him a game.
Well to cut a long and some things I can't post on Dakka type language story short, I leaft the cluib in tears and never returned to it.
I feel sorry for those Guys as they will most likly never amount to much and feel they need to belittle and be the way they are.....to paly a game of toy solders...no less

I do wonder why so many wargamers have such a hard time with basic hygiene...all I can think of to explain it is all that time spent modeling and painting, some folks lose the time or energy to bathe, brush, and clip. Not a satisfying explanation to me, but what else could explain it? I'be yet to visit a gameshop where lack of hygiene isn't an issue among at least some of the clientele.

The only activities i dont clean myself before are hiking and hunting. For practical reasons, deer can smell you and if you dont smell like the woods they will know where you are, and insects, like mosquitoes, are attracted to deodorant, makins deodorant an impractical commodity in the woods. There is no practical reason not to be clean any other time so i clean myself, and from what i can tell we dont have a personal hygiene problem at my flgs. We do have older players who are nasty to newer players so me and my buddies play at my house or when it is less crowded.

We had a that guy for a while. Problem being he was also the reigning champ for the game(not 40k). He went to every tournament and was creating a really bad negative play experience for everyone.
Then he got banned from an event or two, a forum had a post about the stinky one and he realized they meant him(not this forum). And then he responded as a Troll might that he liked the hate.
Honestly after I learned the game's rules a bit better I could manage his strategies and it wasn't so difficult. But he chose to show new players how to play and proceeded to table them. He never spoke clearly or said what he was rolling for. And he had custom dice that no one could read from a distance so it was always guess work if he was rolling what he said he was.
I don't know what's happened to him. I only play the tournament scene now at my two local stores and he wasn't at the last one. Maybe he's moved on to a new game.
That being said there is not a lot you can do to that guys that will stop them from being jerks. Be kind have manners when dealing with them. And if you can force good hygiene habits in your group. One of my local stores recently started banning people who chose not to bathe before leaving their house.
It was a stop gap measure to keep the store from reeking.

Every game store has 'That Guy'. I play with friends, at private houses now, and it's all good. No smells, and the only time we rules lawyer is when we agree to a game of 'balls to the wall'. Otherwise we get the other guys to ref.
I, however, found this in a game store I stepped into to browse, and thought it was hilarious. The bottom of the page is an add for Lynx. Sorry for the shaky photo.

To be fair, some people just smell bad for whatever reason. I know a couple of guys who I'm pretty sure have decent hygiene and wear deodorant (I don't watch them in the shower, but I do know they regularly shower and they don't strike me as the sort of people who are unhygienic) and they just stink anyway. Even if you don't have problems, sometimes you can just forget to put deodorant on, I know sometimes I've had a shower in the morning then been doing stuff all day and by the afternoon I'm aware I stink (though I tend to notice it and avoid confined spaces until I can have another shower, lol). Also, most the smelly gamers I've met are kids, I think in those years you tend to notice smells less but also smell more yourself. Several of my friends who had BO problems in their teens are fine now in their late 20's. Then also the fact you can sit in a hot stuffy room (which many stores, clubs, FLGS's seem to be) and slowly sweat up a stink and if you aren't aware of it you might never notice (again, kids seem to be pretty bad for that, lol).

There is a difference between sticking up a room with a lot of people and having a cloud of filth that follows one individual like a necromancer's familiar.
The That Guy I know had people who would ask for different tables. It really was only if he was within about 6-10 ft. Like an aura of filth

My group screens people that want to join us. So we rarely have that problem. I don't let people touch my models so dirty hands is no concern. And if I don't like what you do or your a cheater I'll tell you. Then I won't play you anymore. But like I said I haven't had any problems for years.

Yeah I'm sure some people just are unhygienic, but I tend try to give people the benefit of the doubt knowing at least 1 of my mate's genuinely just stank even with deodorant and regular showers, lol. Something about his BO just cut through it like a knife. I wouldn't notice it at all, we'd go for a 10 minute walk, when we get back I could smell him from the other side of the room.

I might be "that guy" to be honest I tend to be aggressive and if I think a rule is being done wrong, regardless of who it benefits, I will look it up.
That being said I did have an encounter with one "that guy" that nearly landed me in jail. Back a couple of years ago when I used to play card games, I was in a tournament and ended up playing a couple of people who only occasionally stopped by to play in said tournaments. The majority of of them were decent enough, or at least seemed that way, but there was this one guy that I just disliked from the moment I heard him talking. He was overweight, not obese but he was not going to be running a marathon, and seemed as if he was constantly looking down on everyone. He called people who were three or four years younger than him kid, and would interrupt other people's conversation to ask questions or offer unwanted advice. Anyway after the first two, or maybe it was three not sure anymore, rounds I ended up playing against him. I tried to be nice and polite but the guy kept pushing my buttons, for example I was wearing a band shirt, A7X, and he made remarks about how they were sell-outs or some other such nonsense and kept telling me I shouldn't use certain cards because they were uncompetitive. Not horrible, but irritating none the less. When we were getting near the end of the second game he finally said something that pushed me over the edge, I will refrain from posting what he said since it involved both racial and sexual slurs regarding one of the female gamers in the tournament, after he said that I just let it soak in for a minute. Then I stood up walked around to his side of the table and slugged him as hard as I could right in the middle of his big, irritating, disrespectful face, I will give him credit as a big guy he moved fast. I only managed to punch him three or four more times before some of the other players pulled me away, after that I just grabbed my cards and left. I had no interest in going to jail for assault, and the employee who had been running the tournament was already calling the cops. Never went back there after that.

I shower regularly and make sure I look alright before I leave home for any activity and that includes wargaming. It's mostly because I can get really self-conscious otherwise, so I do my best to avoid that by giving myself as few reasons as possible to worry about my looks, my smell, etc.
I don't think I've met That Guy in our gaming group yet if we have one. Most of the people who frequent the store I go to are cool folks who don't tend to argue about rules that much. I did run into an Astra Militarum/ IG player a few weeks back who hadn't played since 5th edition, yet he couldn't stop boasting about how his army was unbeatable and he'd table anyone like it was nobody's business. I got pretty angry at him in the end, there's only so much 'cock-waving' I can take before I snap.

Our FLGS is pretty rickety and sometimes the AC breaks down. Unfortunately, I am allergic to the metals in deodorant (like really bad) and most fragrances. So I use this hypoallergenic crap that does 0 things for my natural musk. Normally it isn't a problem, but I have to always layer my clothes like I am victorian noble. It sucks. But I am not a very good player, and even though I play Tau, I generally don't do all to well.
I do have a guy in our friend group that only plays the BEST lists he can find. It really sucks and I have generall stopped playing against his armies. It isn't fun for me getting tabled turn 2. I don't care if I lose, but I do want to finish a game at least.
Don't know anyone who cheats at the table but I never look at anyone's lists unless I am running a Tourney.

@jasper yeah thats why I left and never went back there, like I said its been a few years since then so I think the statue of limitation has kicked. To be fair I have no clue whether or not he pressed charges, I never told anyone at the store any personal information so I never found out. Although looking back on it if the guy had pressed charges I'm sure the police could have found me.
@Allseeingskink Go ahead and call me what you will, trust me people have said far more hateful and hurtful things to me than anyone on the internet could.
I also wanted to mention that I am not proud of that incident, and that of course I was in the wrong for how I reacted to the situation. Doesn't change the fact that it happened.
