FudgeDumper - It could be that you are just so uncomfortable with the idea of your chapters primarch having his way with a docile tyranid spore cyst, that you must deny they have any feelings at all.

More Irish/Northern English really, at least to me,

Militarized leprechauns/Yorkshire farmers with sniper rifles

They are the 40K equivalent of the old fantasy Halflings, which are not-hobbits

They just dont seem to fit in with the rest of the guard. Something about that great big huge head. Looks like those football chocolate collectable things from the late 90's http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=https%3A%2F%2Fpbs.twimg.com%2Fmedia%2FBIiGAOgCEAEZ3MN.jpg&imgrefurl=https%3A%2F%2Ftwitter.com%2Folivermcfc%2Fstatus%2F326658311426543617&h=399&w=599&tbnid=iPg-ADqMffTwgM%3A&zoom=1&docid=NiUyOoNAXEbaGM&ei=2oLGU_zQAvSS7AbtpYHgBw&tbm=isch&ved=0CB8QMygAMAA&iact=rc&uact=3&dur=1375&page=1&start=0&ndsp=22

They do look ... odd.
But, if you start with fantasy and 'modernise' them, you end up with something like the GW Ratlings.

They're like horny, angry, rabid versions of Hobbits.

I don't know where you get horny from, we must be looking at different models.

They're sniper hobbits. What happens when you deprive Merry of food and sleep, give him a gun, and have him shoot aliens in a desperate quest for survival on a faraway planet.

Ratlings are neato.

The fluff states that they breed constantly.

I have an army of them, some converted to be regular guardsmen, good times!
I don't much like the current ones.

I always thought they looked like Newfies

Because lore holds that Ratlings like to eat and feth. Outside of that, you might get them to shoot someone, but they would much rather be fething or eating.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

Not horny because they have horns. Horny because they're sexually promiscuous.

I like the current Ratling a lot. The details on the figures are impressive (I especially like the hidden sack of food one of them has) and their faces ooze character. I had some 3rd edition Ratlings when I first started 40k and really disliked those models. They seemed very simplistic even at the time I purchased them (1999 or so).
