Hey guys,

My friend has got a 2k list of the following

1 Stormlord
6 Centurions with Grav Cannons
Lysander
10 Terminators

2 Stormtalons

Everything goes into the Stormlord with obvious exception of the Talons. The super heavy charges forward with it's vulkan megas. With the fact the Stormlord counts as open-topped for the purposes of shooting, the grav-cannons lay out ridiculous amounts of fire, while the Terminators and Lysander act as a counter charge unit.

Now, this guy is my mate and I'd like, where possible to really hit him with a nice hard counter.
I was thinking -

1 Tactical Squad with 3 melta. DP
1 Sternguard squad with 6 melta. DP
Ironclad with a melta gun and 2 Hunter Killers. DP

Combat Squad with melta DP
Venerable with Assault Cannon. DP

3 Talons
1 Raven with Tigurius & Centurion Devs in tow.

The tactical squad, sternguard and Iron Clad all drop down turn 1 behind the rear armour and unleash.

This is the question - will 9 Melta shots (8 with Ultramarines tactical doctrine), 1 Heavy flamer and 2 HK missiles be enough to kill 9 hull points from rear armour 10 reliably? Question 2 - If he positions so I can't hit rear armour, would side armour be killed reliably?

Thanks,

Dan

I seem to remember something new to 7th about opentop vehicles not liking templates.

You could also just get a stalker and kill his talons then play the objectives until he gets out of the tank.

Or

Get your own stormlord.

Ask your friend to play nice and not use tournament lists in a friendly game.

sallies drop pod list can do well here. So can scouts tbh.

sallies list would be:

Vulkan/w command squad. apothecary 4 meltas, 4 melta bombs. drop pod
Master of the forge/w combi melta.

4x tac squad/w melta and melta bomb. drop pod

6x ironclad/w drop pod

utterly rapes his list.

Scouts would be:
white scars CT

2x Motf/w bike and conversion beamer
5 scout biker squad/w booby traps and melta bomb

5 scout bikers/w melta bomb

6 scout squads /w melta bomb and LSS's with MM

4x ironclads/w drop pod

stalker

and still got 55 points left over. You litterally surround it with scouts and ironclads before assaulting it with melta bombs.

Play fair? Ha.

I'll bring my shadowsword then.

With the +D3 HP for exploding and the re-rolls on the melta hits, you'd cripple if not kill the Stormlord, and that would have nasty consequences for the guys inside when it blows up (of course, it might hurt your guys too, but you're coming out ahead on a points trade, I think). He'd then have to kill every melta-toting model before the next turn or get hit again, and then you've got fliers inbound as well.

Also, would your Shadowsword be any good against it? I'm not sure what it does, but it's a fething big cannon...

EDIT: Apparently so.

Yeah, 4 lascannons as well as a D strength cannon.

Probably 1-3 hull points with a potential D6+6.

Indeed HP it out.

The guys inside take ST10 ap2 hits. pretty much removing the whole unit.

2 10man units of sternguard will wreck that thing soo fast. while costing just about the same amount of points.

(the catastrophic explosion is random allocation so no lysander tanking (unless he gets lucky)

It's AV 12 rear. And counts as open topped but does not suffer from the +1 to vehicle damage or template rules.

Your solution is an Imperial Knight for the tank and centurions. Clean up Lysander and company afterward. Otherwise, I'd suggest long ranged anti-tank and make Lysander walk up the board (or die in the explosion). Imperial Fist tactics with lascannon devs or centurion devs should do the trick. Cover and ablative wounds for the former.

Sorry to have been so disappointing!

I think I might use the Shadowsword as a lure. Encourage him to drive forward turn one to expose his armour. A shadowsword against front armour has a reasonable chance I'd think.

A D weapon hitting a superheavy and rolling a 6, that's still d6+6, right?

Is he playing an unbound list or allying IG? Because marines don't have access to a stormlord.

Take some buildings.
Grav does nothing to buildings (see graviton rule in BRB).
That leaves him with what shooting at your AV14?
That's right, at best a couple of lascannons.

Take 3 landspeeders, give them all 2-multi-meltas.
Deep strike, shoot. Should get ~4 penetrating hits.
That with a bit of other shooting should down it on turn 2 with minimal losses.

Or, since he seems to think unbound is fun, how about dark eldar?

Paper Beast Rock-
11 units of 4 trueborne, all with blasts, all in venoms.
1 unit of 3 trueborn, 3 blasts, in venom.
1 haemonculi.

Turn 1, move up, disembark, and fire.
47 S8 AP2 lance shots. The first 27 shots would glance it to death. The remaining 20 shots start putting the hurt on the guys inside. Of course, the venoms would fire as well and the survivors, dishing out another 24 wounding shots.

With his very limited ability to engage multiple threats at range, I'd say it would over after turn 3.
72 poison shots and 47 lance shots is far more than what his 25 wounds worth of infantry and absorb.

Not super sure...but I think it counts as open top for embarcing/exiting...Not shooting... So it may seem broken good, because its broken...

I'm starting to like a lot the idea of taking a Bastion to counter a lot of annoying stuff in the game. But, that will make fighting against me annoying too.

Two bastions then

(Stormlord is the best looking variant and I'm glad it's not terrible in the game will probably buy one this christmas)

Or you know just at minimum glance the stormlord to death and let the Catastrophic explosion do its thing for the guy inside.

He wont be able to buff them selves with an invul so besides lysander wont be able to deal with ST10 AP2 random allocation.

Edit: If your going for buildings try the Firestorm Redoubts having 2 quadlinked las cannons is nice or two punnisher cannons for 40 st 5 shots

The Stormlord is often mistaken for open topped, which it isn't. You are correct, it is only open topped for embarking and disembarking. The firing arc of passengers is also debatable, as it could be obscured by the casemate when firing forward. This is because the wording of the fire points is "Fire Points: Twenty models can fire from the troop bay.".

Unbound. In addition, we have a house rule at our GW where you can take an IG superheavy as an SM one.

All points are correct. However, if a model was to be stood in the troops bay, you would be able to see over the top. I don't want to get all specific and technical, but realistically, it's a legitimate tactic. It would however reduce the range of the grav when shooting, considering the several inches of superheavy it needs to fire over.
