Hey everyone, I just picked up a starter box today. Yep, a little late to the party, but after going through the rulebook, this game looks like it can be ridiculous levels of fun and relies on some serious prediction, which I like. One wrong guess, and you could have your opponent tailing you. I'm seeking some specifics on starting a rebel fleet, nothing to big or crazy, as I still have to feed my 40k Habit a little more, before wading into Fantasy and still keep up with Heroclix. (Kill me now! :p)

I was at the shop, sorting through their selection of ships. My eyes always draw to the Y-Wing, because I loved them in Rogue Squadron on N64, despite them not seeming like an optimal choice for dog fights :/. I also saw B-Wings, and my favorite: The A-Wing. But, the issue ensues, I have no idea what any of these do, nor do I wish to toss money any ships, only to be disappointed, and out 10 bucks per ship.

As a starting player, what are some recommendations to start a balanced beginner fleet, or any sites that have details on the products would be even better. I did see a thread up already about links, but unfortunately, I cannot access those from yet (I'll have to hunt the thread down after hours).

Thanks!

1 Core Set
1 X-Wing Expansion
1 YT-1300 (aka Falcon)
2 B-Wings
1-2 Y-Wings
2 E-Wing (only recommend 2 because of Advanced Sensors, if you don't think you'll ever want two copies of that card (you will, because they're amazing) just buy one)
1 A-Wing
3 Z-95s (these are great little ships at 12 or 13 points a piece for the PS2 and 4 versions)

That's my general recommendation for starting out with Rebels. It doesn't have to be done all at once or anything. A great learning squad that is easy to fly is Chewie+2 X-Wings which is why they're the first 3 things listed. B-Wings are amazing ships, Y-Wings can mount a Turret, and E-Wings have a couple of awesome named pilots, and come with good upgrade cards. The A-Wing will shine once Rebel Aces is out, so it's further down my list, and 3 Zs are a pretty good way to get more ships on the board. That list gives you access to most of what the Rebellion has to offer. Rebel Aces is close to release so I would probably drop one of the B-Wings and wait for it (giving you 2 total B-Wings and A-Wings, plus some amazing upgrades). I personally love my HWK, a lot of people don't though, so it's a take it or leave it thing and I left it off the list for now (it gets better in Rebel Aces to with Kyle and Jan as crew for the other). But that above should give you a more than good starting point to build a lot of varied lists.

Now, that all said, I would recommend using this builder: http://geordanr.github.io/xwing/
It has the easiest interface I've used yet.

For summary of each of the ships, including the upgrades and pilots included, check out Wookieepedia's X-Wing articles: http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/X-Wing_Miniatures_Game

Thanks for the quick reply! Sounds like a solid start and I'll use those links for advisement. Also, what is considered the 'standard' point game? I might have missed that in the rulebook, if it was even stated.

A standard game is 100pts per side.

I personally prefer the A-Wing over the Z-95. I have 1 & might get a second some day but I just haven't found it to be able to do much aside from die more quickly than the A-Wing. Lt Blount is the only really good use I've actually found for the Z but with only 1 assault missile or stripping stealth devices I just don't have much luck with him. I actually suggest:

2 total core sets
1 X-Wing expansion
1 Y-wing
1 A-Wing
1 B-wing
1 YT-1300
1 HWK-290
Rebel Aces
1-2 Z-95
Rebel transport
1 E-wing

I think the HWK-290 is amazing when setup correctly. I disagree on Jan Ors as crew & always have great success running it as follows:
Kyle Katarn pilot
Moldy Crow title
Blaster Turret
Recon Specialist
Shield Upgrade
this combo gives an excellent support ship that can hold its own shooting. Works extremely well with Garven Dreis with veteran instincts. Just my .02.YMMV

Sadly and wonderfully, every expansion set has cards you can use, from both sides. There really isn't a bad purchase to be made. I highly recommend poking around http://geordanr.github.io/xwing/

and making a 100 pt squad you like. Buy it, then expand from there as whimsy takes you.

I'd just slowly buy all of the expansions, then you have the all the cards and ships and can try out what you like. Not really any bad buys at this point.

I like this builder better but ymmv. Have fun.

I don't run the blaster turret that often since I prefer the ability of the Ion, which may be why I like the idea of Jan crew. She can give you the choice between an evade or focus for hers (or any Rng 1-3) ship, can pair up with Garven pretty well too. Overall I think they did an excellent job with Rebel Aces, I haven't seen anything from it yet that won't get used.

Hey, i just started playing at the end of May myself and loving the game.

Heres my recommendations.

Core set - You have

I went for the A-Wing, like how quick and a nuisance it can be. Take a missile with it, its fun blowing up a Tie, Turn 1.

then i went for a Y-Wing. This thing is slow but tough, take the ION turret, it can shoot 360 and stun an opponent ship.

Finally the B-Wing, Again tough but better movement.

Havent played with the new releases yet, as i wanted to gain knowlege from Wave 1 first.

All the cards are available online if you look around. You could do some proxying and see what you like before making purchases. It's tougher to proxy movement dials, but you could do it. That being said, the game seems pretty well balanced. Y-wings are a bit niche, A-wings are a a little overpriced, and TIE Advanced are a lot overpriced, but everything else is pretty nicely balanced (particularly if you're used to GW balancing).

So, I have a similar question but I dont know which faction I want to play. I was thinking of grabbing a second core set, an x-wing expansion and a tie-fighter expansion to give me a good base for demo games and to be able to play small games with friends. Does this sound good?

I bought two boxed sets as well. Having plenty of cards, counters and dice is a good idea, and the price of the boxed set is almost worth it for the ships alone. Adding an additional TIE and X-wing is also a good plan because there are different cards and pilots in those sets, giving you plenty of choice.

After that you can play around with those ships, decide on one faction or the other (or just do both if you want) and move up from there.

The extra set is a great idea. There are many instances, even with the core ships, where you'll be rolling 4 dice. The extra movement templates and cards are handy, too. Makes it easier to get a friend into the game.
