Stubborn Dark Angels Veteran Sergeant

so, I was looking into making an IG army, just a side note- I would only use the karskin models for my infantry, most likely pure vet IG, (because those models+ helmets look amazing, and I would run all my vets with the carapace armor)
I was wondering how some of the named HQs actually perform, most notably, Iron Hand Straken and Yarrick. Straken- because I would love for those melee buffs should I get charged, and Yarrick cuz... well. He is pure baddass, look up baddass, you will see his picture.
Also, the named sergeants, are they worth the points? or is it just a pure throw away that never works, even in fluffy games?

I personally don't used named chars anymore with my IG.... I used to till the 3 named characters I used got removed ><
Al'Rahem, Chenkov and Sly Marbo (not a HQ I know). I loved having respawning conscripts coming on from the Al'Rahem Flank.... really made it feel like a proper flanking maneuver.
Regarding the other HQ's, I hear Creed is still good. I don't know much about him and the others though because I didn't use them.

Yarrick is good in the he combines being a CCS and a Lord Commissar. Now he's also scouring to go with being unkillable, he can be a real pain.
Haver you considered Creed? The extra cost order and what amounts to free voxes for all might be worth it for Vets.

I don't really have much experience at all with Yarrick, but I've tried out Straken every now and then. Unfortunately he sort of clashes with almost everything else in the army--especially the whimpy lil' 5-man unit he's tied to! If he were an Independent Character he could be amazing in a massive blob of conscripts or paling around with some Ogryns, but the CCS (a unit dedicated to weapon specialists) he has to be with is not something you want on the frontlines in the first place. The man himself is scary, but just a bit too expensive for a CC buff to a unit which never EVER wants to be in CC.
I think Harker used to be worth it in the 5th edition codex, but he got nerfed hard and lost pretty much all of his utility buffs. I don't think the other named sergeant (or any of the PCS commanders) even survived the transition to the 6th edition book. Is Bastonne still around? I'll have to check my book when I find it.

Yea, I used Straken and was unimpressed. He only passes look out sir! on a 4+ since he's not an IC. He's going to end up in challenges with monstrous creatures that will wipe the floor with him. When I fielded him he got kill by a Space Marine sargeant, before even landing a hit (at initiative 3). And they gave him the most useless warlord trait, relentless. You could load up the CCS on plasma or heavy flamer and heavy bolter, but at 130 points Straken is costs way too much.
If you want to go all the way, you can get Nork Deddog, but the majority toughness of the unit is still 3 until the other CCS guys die off. So Nork will be taking wounds at T3. Making him pretty useless too.

I know creed+kell is really nice (ld9 for orders? yes please)
I really want straken to be good :( I think he would be best used vs an ork/daemons/insert CC oreinted army here list.
why? any unit in 6 inches get counter assault and furious charge... suddenly they are half way to orks! (in my case, with a 'ard boy save! lol)

Straken in a CCS built around him could be pretty nasty I think, kit the vets as melee or meltas, take Nork, a priest and as detrimental as it might be, a commissar. Give those who can take them power weapons and get them stuck in. It's an expensive majority t3 but I think if supported by a blob and some orders it would be straight nasty.
Yarrick is great in infantry heavy armies, his stats speak for themselves.

I saw on a blog recently straken took on a wraithknight in combat and won. He seems ok in a normal games. Just build the squad around him and pick your targets wisely. Focus on getting the squad buffed up for assault (melta guns maybe?) and all the grenades etc.
He alone is pretty tough but you have to find a way to get the dead weight he is stuck with to be useful.

Been putting together a list with yarrick straken and nork to act as lynch pin to 2 blobs either side, conscripts and bullgryns up front, looking nasty and will probably need some big guns somewhere

Straken is an... intreasting character. he's not nesscarily bad by any means. However he's basicly a "melee combat beast" in a codex that really isn't designed with that in mind. it's also worth noting that he costs as much as a Space Marine Captain and SM Command squad. and the SM cap and command squad can get better upgrades for the "beat stick" role. Straken's not a bad pick if you're not running allies or anything and want a melee beatstick HQ who can also in a pinch issue orders. but generally speaking in the era of Allies, I suspect you'd be better off taking a small allied SM force.

iirc kell is ld8, so ld 8 orders. Probably that might be useful for eavy weapon squads and conscripts.

Raiden you have BA still right? If taking straken, ally in corbulo and tycho.
Yes corbulo will be tanking on t3 but it is his 3+/2+++ that actually tanks and that won't be changed. LOS and st8 to the guardsmen.
I say tycho because he ignores all armour like straken with no I penalty.
Throw in Nork and a Priest to help with combat (with counter attack, furious charge and rerolls to hit and maybe wound, it won't matter if you get charged) and you have a pretty nasty unit which still buffs those around it to the same extent. Guard units nearby get furious charge and counter attack, BA units nearby get furious charge and fnp.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Will he grant monster hunter to the unit? If so it will be an excellent anti-mc unit. Corbulos rending sword and norks attacks combined with both straken and tychos armour ignoring attacks, all rerolling to wound will be amazing. Automatically Appended Next Post: Especially since they will be rerolling to hit too!
