I was wondering if going to ground was ever an effective tactic, or if the increased mobility is more important.

For the guy who leaves it all on the field (because he doesn't pick up after the game).

It's useful if you have a unit with weak saves you need to stay at a point to achieve an objective. Then they're less likely to be killed by the enemy before they do what they need to do.

A troop that is camping an objective that has stealth, shrouded, or both going to ground can be a very useful tactic.

AM can go to ground and then nilch the drawbacks on an order. Other armies, when playing Eternal War missions, can make use of G2G in cover to increase durability while objective squatting.

They are my bulwark against the Terror. They are the Defenders of Humanity. They are my Space Marines, and they shall know no fear.

A unit with stealth going to ground in ruins has a 2+ cover save, meaning it's nigh-invulnerable unless your opponent has a powerful assault or many flamers, none of which are commonly seen on the TT.

You can't think of this in a vacuum. It is very much about all the specifics in a given situation (such as what is shooting at you and what you unit needs to do in the following turn)

As an Ork-player you might be interested in Lootas and their ability to Go to Ground with an Aegis Defense Line.

10-15 Lootas, one ADL and Go to Ground.
That should give you a 2+ cover while still firing an average of 20-30 shots, that suddenly fire at BS1 instead of BS2.
