Which is better should i equip my Tactical sergeants with boltgun or bolt pistol and chainsword?

BP + CW looks alot cooler.

People will say that you should gear your Sergeants towards shooting, because the Tactical squad is only good at shooting, and suggest a Combi weapon.

This isn't a bad idea, but lately i've had alot of success using power weapons instead. It gives you more Tactical options.

A chainsword won't, though. So may as well use a bolter.

It’s really a marginal difference either way. One more bolter shot, or one more CC attack. There are times when both are nice to have.

I personally have a mix in my collection, but mostly the BP/CCW set up. This is mostly due to looks and tradition. I’m also in the process of replacing a number of them with combi weapon sarges.

While tac sarges are more flexible, your dev sarge should always be packing a chainsword. If his squad is shooting, he should be giving someone BS5. If you get charged, might as well get the swings in, especially if it’s a random tarpit unit holding you down.

If your option are only between a plain chainsword/pistol or bolter then bolter all the way. That 1 extra attack won't do you much good.

Now if the option was between PowerFist/pistol or bolter then I'd choose the Power Fist because that opens up the tactical usefulness of the squad.

Depends on who you fight and what sort of games you play. If you play against Chaos often, and Chaos Cultists specifically, the Cultist leader can't deny a challenge, no matter how outclassed they are. So two attacks from the Sergeant, another on the charge, could snag a quick and easy tactical objective. If Challenges are a common thing, then yes, chainsword it up or, better yet, power swords, but in other sorts of scenarios, a combi-bolter is a FAR better option and an actual worry of mine when I see an opponent have one. Look Out Sir saves on an assault weapon can be difficult to get rid of if the dice favor the Sergeant.
