AM are pretty competitive. Vehicles got better in 7th as you need at least an AP2 or an open top to explode them, though they can still get wrecked via hull points.

Am can be hard to play, as sometimes they are fragile/suffer from low leadership, but good use of cover, an aegis line, tanks and and using their various orders can let them tear infantry and vehicles apart.

How many guardsmen should my friend run in an 1850 list? I've seen some with 30, but 60 or 90 seems better to me.

I have a friend with 330 guardsmen in his list at 1850.

I have ten Leman Russ tanks and two hydras in my 1850 armored battlegroup list.

Your list depends on what you are catering towards.

I've seen mechanized groups with about 4 Chimeras filled with 40-ish Veterans. I've also seen gunlines with about 200-ish models.

It really depends on what style you wish to play.

Are the 330 conscripts? I don't think you can fit 350 normal guardsmen.

6 platoons each with a PCS (5 guardsmen) and 5 squads (50 guardsmen) comes to 1680pts and 330 models. So 330 bodies do fit in a 1850pt list...with 170pts to spare!

...That's seriously a lot of bodies.

609th Kharkovian 2000pts
Deathwatch 2000pts
Sick Marines 1500pts
Spikey Marines 2000pts

How does that not auto win games with Objective Secured?

Most likely severe weakness to blast templates and failed Leadership tests is my guess. Yes, you can run an all bodies build, but it may not work. Success will vary on the enemy and the battlefield.

I think AM are.

My friend runs an armoured company, Vets in chimeras/valkryies, a couple of varied Leman Russes, and a few artillery tanks like the insanely undercosted Wyvern.

They park up in a corner, so that its really difficult to get side armour, and impossible to get rear. They shoot at you for four or so turns, then eventually move out with the vets to grab some objectives.

Pretty annoying army to face, tbh.

A hard counter to that would be a pod melta spam.

As to the 300+ bodies, you can do it cheaper and bypass the leadership issues:
CCS
PCS x3
50 man blob x3 with priest
50 conscript blob x3 with commissar
1515pts

Automatically Appended Next Post:
326 men so only 4 off...

Pods are so expensive though, haha.

Am are a top teir army... so yes very competittive... very VERY little that army doesnt do just as, if not better, then every single other army. CC would be the only lacking point, though they do better in CC then lots of armies still.

Also AM have the advantage of being an imperial and thus battle brothers with everyone, giving them access to cheap counters to a lot of their weaknesses.

I think their biggest problem is that they are a fantastic allied detachment since being primary really doesnt do much for them.

I've been thinking about this:
CCS
PCS x3
50 man blob x3 with priest
Then you have room left over for tanks.

If your running heavy infantry I think yarrick is better than a command squad since you can keep him safe in a big old blob.

I guess the infantry squads would be completely naked. No special weapons or vox caster?
