Thought Question Dakka!

What would be your perfect starter set? One that would have been the perfect jumping point for you and a friend to get into the game.
There are a few limitations. In the spirit of previous starter sets it will include a miniature rule book, rulers, basic dice set, and blast templates. Basic terrain is up to you. Following the guide lines of the last 2 sets (AoBR, DV) It must include 2 sides, one imperial, one not. The armies must be between 500-750 points apiece. The two armies combined must have at least one vehicle with AV and one Calvary/beast/bike unit. However, the 2 armies must be equally matched! This goes against the "destroy the xenos" attitude in the previous sets.

For those creative souls, Include the background! Or whatever else inspires you.

My call?
Catachans Vs Orks (Loved the old ork hunters list)
Grey knights vs Daemons
Sisters of Battle vs Chaos Space Marines (sisters need the love. Are you hearing me GW! LOVE THE SISTERS!)

I would rather single starter sets for every army. A set up where you get a small force, codex and rule book etc for every race. That way we arent stuck with gross non imperial guard races every time

Thats valid! I thought about that, thats always an option with the dual army set. I dont mind the dual army though, I have fond memories of the space marines pounding my dark eldar in the 3rd E set. In fact I would sell my collection and par down to the DV set if they were really balanced.

Agreed on single army starter sets. $150 for 750pts of variety and all the starting stuff. Rulebook, so on. Codex I could pass on, instead using a starter sheet since GW prints on 8000 year old papyrus and wants $50 for each codex... That's too much of a price jump. But, HQ, two troops of minimum units, basically enough sprues to make the smallest amount twice, an elite and heavy support choice, or in the case of high mobility armies, a fast attack. Vypers in Eldar are a good addition even though the actual Vyper is meh at best.

Looking at the chaos battleforce for a friend and it just needs a Land Raider to be a good starter list at 1000pts, including plasma and Melta weapons. Without the Land Raider, still a good list at 750pts. The Eldar box right now is good as well and I'll be picking one up, but I would have liked mini rules included. Going all digital has not been kind...

I am sensing your a fan of the one army starter set too. It sounds like you guys would like a more balanced battle force option.

Necrons VS Tyranids could be cool for those who are into that kinda thing. I know that breaks the guidelines though.

If anything, it would be Necrons vs. Eldar as they are arch-rivals. Necrons vs. Tyranids wouldn't make much sense as they follow the same goal (kinda) and don't have a real reason to fight each other.

The reason that things are the way they are is because it's cheap. You can get into 40k with all the rules and two armies for $100. That's less than the price of some battleforces.

Anyways, were I to stick to the theme, I'd put in two armies where with a minimal amount of effort you could use all the minis in one army.

For example, Dark vengeance could have had basic marines, with an extra sprue with robes and sword applique to turn them into dark angels and a sprue of spikey bitz to make them chaos marines. That way if a chaos player bought it, they'd have what came with the box, AND could use the terminators and tac marines as well, rather than being forced to sell the extra parts off.

Another example of this could be, as stated, orks and imperial guard, where the chimera that comes with the guard side comes with some extra bits to make it look like a looted chimera, and the ork killa kanz come with things that would easily double as vehicle upgrades for the chimera (fire tubes could look the same as something orky, for example), and the some of the orks could be broken down in such a way to make reasonably convincing trophies.

But I would make them one-army boxes. We already have those. A starter box should be something different than that.

True, and that would also be a cool set.

What are you even doing in this forum if you are not into 40K?
Seriously, are you bored or something?

Anyway, I'd love a tau VS anything starter, but its highly unlikely, as you need one side "good guys" and one "nasty ailens", and tau are kinda the middle ground here...

can neither confirm nor deny I lost track of what I've got right now.

The GW website would have an option where you could pick out the 2 armies you would like, with rulebook and etc.., It would come in a generic 40k box and GW can structure the models included for each race.

Tyranids versus Daemons

Tyranids
- Prime with bonesword / lashwhip and rending claws.
- Warrior Brood with melee weapons
- Hormagaunt Brood
- Carnifex with melee weapons
- Biovore (with a new model)

Daemons
- Herald of Khorne on Juggernaut
- Bloodletters of Khorne
- Bloodcrushers of Khorne
- Flesh hounds of Khorne
- Skull cannon of Khorne

I don't play Daemons or know anyone who does so I have no idea if this is fair.

My perfect starter set would include a friend to play with.

But less seriously, I think Necrons vs Ultramarines would be great. Both armies are reletively easy to play, they look/play completely differently and you've got the whole Dumbnos storyline as a background.

Necrons: 4000+ pts
Tyranids: 1000+ pts
Word Bearers: 1500+ pts
Emperor's Children: 1500+ pts
Minotaurs: 2000+ pts (killed by Primaris, thanks GW)
Custodes: 1000+ pts

Tau Vs Chaos Space Marines.
-Basic Tau infantry and a pathfinder team with one or two crisis suits, maybe a broadside. Either an Ethereal or Cadre Fireblade.
-A Sorcerer of your choice with a small war-band with some infantry and warp talons. Maybe a devastator team. Definitely a Hellbrute.
-One set of basic templates
-36 Small Dice
-6 Cardboard Objective Markers of Varried Designs
-A cheap measuring tape or other measuring implement of at least 60"
-A small rule-book with all the basic rules, saves space by being without illustration for the most part and not having redundant sequencing/table entries.
-A mini codex with basic information on the included models, their roles, and stats as needed to play with only those models.
-A half burned looking pamphlet on the Tau'va with runes and scribbles of chaos worshipers, made cheaply for the sake of novelty.

That should be all you need to get started with that set, and includes all the basic implements needed to play the game. Before anyone says I should have included terrain, that is what coffee mugs, salt shakers, and old rags are for.

I think that the one army starter is a great idea, but GW would (sadly) ruin it, since they seem to be cramming unnecessary items into box/combo sets. I think they would sell the codex, rulebook, army, and like paints brushes and tools and charge like $400 for it. My point is, if GW actually does it, it would be overpriced and have so many unnecessary items.

I didn't choose the Astartes life, the Astartes life chose me.

Starter set implies to me that it is for the initial jump into the game. I would support a starter for each army that allows people to have a fun game for $50.

Each starter should include
- Small stripped down rulebook
- Set of dice
- Cardboard templates
- Measuring device, roll of tape similar to what is used in tailoring.
- 1 HQ (SM Capt, Herald, Nob, etc.)
- 1 Troop (SM, Boyz, Warriors, etc.)
- 1 Tank or Walker or Monstrous Creature (Dread, Battlesuit(s), Walkers, etc.)

This implies two things, first, each army needs a comparable size model at the slots above which is not a huge stretch. Second, the boxes need to be somewhat balanced against each other. Weapon options should be restricted to be both useful and help in the balance of the factions against each other. Demons would need a generic demon as printing 4 different starters for one army is a bit dumb.

OOOO I got an idea!

Tau vs SoB!
No need to worry about the problem of SoB multi-part not fitting right when its not multi-part, and we get plastic sisters. and as they cover half the army with a handful of models, it would be almost as if we got plastic sisters! (and whats mising, could be converted of whats in the starter, it would sell like crazy just for the sisters side!)

Not sure what to actually put in there, but Id assume the sister side would be a cannoness, a 10 girl team with 2 guns (flamers or meltas probablies), a small seraphim team and either retributers or engines, and the tau side would probably have a fireblade, some fire warriors, pathfinders and suits (of some kind)

can neither confirm nor deny I lost track of what I've got right now.
