Subject: are unbound allies allowed? If so to what effect?

Hey folks,
I am planning to use my tiny Imperial guard army in with my Marines tomorrow and my BRB is down at my brothers house so I can't check it out.
I play a bound Marine army and intended on using a commisar as my IG HQ choice but he has not arrived yet, I could proxy a model granted but would rather spend the points elsewhere anyway.
If I have a bound Marine force then an unbound ally does that make the entire army unbound?
Thanks in advance!

It does, All Units in Battle-Forged Armies must all belong to a Detachment.

Thanks, tough call now, not played unbound so far and seems pointless to do so with what is a bound force in all respects but a missing commisar, probably proxy him in that case!

Just proxy him
If you don't have a regular model, take any model you can spare with roughly the same size and stick e.g. a big orange piece of paper to it.

Personally I don't find Unbound Armies to be that bad of a thing, as long as one is not doing it to make clearly broken lists.

^^^ Agree with that.
Unbound is a nice thing if you use it to make something like 'melee-only Necron'; Terminator- BA or a Furioso-only list.
It's perfect for when you have a nice idea that just doesn't fit within a Battleforged List.
But I understand that you don't want to go Unbound because of a single model that will probably not survive Turn 1
You'd lose too many bonuses for that!

I really like it for Narrative based Lists. One can easily use a Chaos Sorceress to represent a psyker from a race usually without Psykers, definitely one being tempted away by Choas, but that doesn't always justify Cultists let alone a Space Marine body-guards.

I agree RE unbound lists, I keep thinking of doing a Marine one that runs all Termies and Scouts, a kind of fluffy first company saving the tenths butt list, but yeh, for a commisar who will either be killed turn one, or more likely ignored the whole game as he can do hardly anything I don't see much point in not proxying him!

My DE unbound list is basically only changed in so much as I take 6 heavy supports. 3 ravagers and 3 razorwings.
I wouldn't call it too much but it is nasty.

In an unbound army you can take detachments right? If you took a CAD in an unbound army wouldn't the models in the CAD benefit from the CAD rules?

No, you can only take 'Detachment - Formations'. http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/608505.page That image should basically answer most questions.

You CAN "take" detachments, however you only ever gain special rules from formation detachments, not any other form such as a CAD.

Actually, the rules explicitly say that unbound cannot take any detachments that are not formations.
You are not allowed to use a CAD in an unbound army.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe. |
