According to the rumors,
10 Grey Hunters, lets you get 2 plasma guns, and 2 plasma pistols. Upgrade one to wolf guard and take 2 plasma pistols. Add Pod.
Now you can land and unload 8 Plasma shots.
Do you think it's a good basis for a pod alpha strike?
It's more expensive than sternguard, but it shows up with more bodies.
And of course, objective secure, acute senses, and counter charge.
+Free Ragnar if you spam it.

Disregard the free Ragnar bit, there's no way in hell that rumour is true.
As for the rest, I ran a similar trick in the last book but outflanking with saga of the Hunter, a pp wolf priest, a dual-pp wgpl, and a 2-pg 1 pp GH squad. All I can really say is it works in that it annihilates anything in a 12" rradius, but is expensive for 12 T4 PA guys.

285pts for the aforementioned Grey Hunter Squad and Drop Pod 8 Plasma Gun shots, and 10 models.
215pts for a 5man Sternguard and Drop Pod if they buy two Plasma Guns and 3 Combi-Plasmas. 281pts if they add three more models for a total of 8 models, and the bolters get specialist ammo.
210pts for a 5 man Command Squad and Drop Pod from Codex: Space Marines, for 10 Plasma Shots. 295 if the unit adds in a Techmarine with a Full Servo-Harness and a combi Plasma, for 13 plasma shots when they come down.

A friend of mine does something similar with Dark Angel Veterans. They come down with plasma pistols and regular pistols and hug something. It usually dies.
Granted, they aren't superhard to kill, but you HAVE to deal with them. They are annoying.

Unless the pistols got a substantial discount, likely the other options are going to be better as above. If you are running pure wolves though and want to go mass plasma though at least you do now have an option.

This makes it a very hard decision. Yes the command squad with techmarine will be getting 5 more plasma shots. But if the command squad suffers 5 casualties, there is just the techys plasma left, if the GH suffer 5 casualties, they still have 8 plasma shots, every casualty is a big deal to the command squad, whilst not ao much for the GH. And lets not forget ob sec and counter attack.
Compared to the sternies - the sternies suffer from them being combi weapons. They will at first have 25% more plasma shots than the GH, afterwards though this will go down to 50% less than the GH. Their spec ammo makes up for it somewhat but not totally. Again though we must remember ob sec and counter attack for the GH.
