I am putting together a CSM army, and I want my main HQ to be a crazed Daemon conjurer.

I've got no experience with CSM other than playing against them, and 3 codixes to pick from (CSM, Black Legion, or Crimson Slaughter) , and a decision to make between Daemon Prince and Sorcerer (I think I prefer the Sorcerer-route for personal fluff reasons, but am open to using a Daemon Prince here since I guess he could summon without full perils risk).

I like both the Skull that gives you Eternal Warrior in the Black Legion book, and also the Balestar of Mammon thing in Crimson Slaughter supp that gives you access to the Divination table.

Any advice on which way to go for a Daemon-summoning Chaos Psyker? Anything to avoid like the plague?

Ive always wanted to make a Chaos CC psyker army(Crimson slaughter would be a great choice). But Sorcerer's are weak if you want them to be just a dominant beast in CC and range.

I would go with a Daemon prince psyker, He would be very hard to kill and would prolly fit the Crimson slaughter theme.

I believe Crimson slaughter has an upgrade that turns an HQ into a possessed. That'd make him a daemon sorcerer. Would want to confirm they can take it and what not though.

The draw back with that is he can only joined possessed though.

A simple spell familiar is decent option to make sorcerers good at daemonology.

Yeah, I have thought about just keeping him "vanilla" and buying him a kitty. But the BL and CS supps have some artifacts that seem like they would work genuinely well for a Psyker, but not so much grabs my attention in the main Codex artifact-wise.

not sure why you would want to do this, but could you give the possessed HQ a jump pack and put him with warp talons? They have the daemon special rule.

Is it a limit on joining units with Daemon or is it limited to "possessed"

Possessed only. It'd actually be useful if it were any daemons.

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

In your opinion, are Possessed made more viable by Crimson Slaughter?

They still seem like a pricey option for a 1 wound T4 with with no guns to shoot. They'd be easy as heck to convert though cuz I have a bunch of daemon troop bits laying around.

(NOTE: Necrons don't prepare you for the complex decision making of the CSM army list . "Gauss vs. Tesla" is alot easier than "pick between these 20 troop choices, now think about marks, now think about icons, now think about unit wargear, now think about champion wargear, etc")

They make it to the enemy more easily as they get faster movement, shrouded, or improved invulnerable saves.

However, they are more sucky when they get there as only one roll boosts their melee prowess. Essentially they're chaos marines with close combat weapons and S5 for nearly twice the price.

Potentially useful as escort for a daemon-possessed lord, though.

To be honest, you want daemonology, consider a Daemon Prince. No special shennanigans required - he can take daemonology without risk and can be made a very tasty psyker.

I tend to prefer the arch-pyromancer: Black Legion Sorceror with Mastery Level 3, Spell Familiar and the Last Memory of Yuranthos. I encountered this...ah...."gentleman" with a tervigon army with a vast swarm of small termagant units. The rate that this guy can scorched earth an army of small infantry units is ridiculous.

Right. This is the best choice.
For this, I'd take a winged Nurgle or Tzeentch DP.

Crimsom Slaughter Sorcerer with Prophet of Voices and spell familiar if you're set on a Sorcerer. If you get the demonolgy power that increases their invuln save by 1, and roll the 3+ Invuln power, you get 2++ close combat marines.

If you're looking to summon daemons, have you thought about Daemons as allies too? 2 Tzeentch Heralds with 2 squads of 11-12 Horrors is a good way to summon and boost warp charges.

Crimson Slaughter Sorcerer is the best option. I play CSM and have all 3 books, Divination is just too useful to pass up. You can run another bare bones (ML2) Sorcerer to sit out of LoS and summon, while the Div Sorcerer does his thing.

Another idea is to run a Daemon ally, take a cheap herald for summoning, and a squad of 11 pink horrors (ML2) as the troop choice for the extra dice and holding a backfield objective.
