Oh man... tell me about it (in regards to your sig)... There was one time where during 5th and 6th ed I owned a bunch of codices and maybe models for only 1 army...

You might come up with the same issue for Infinity and Warmachine as far as indecisiveness goes... I have Ariadna models for Infinity but I can tell you that there isn't a time where I haven't looked at Nomads, PanO, and Haaqislam. And you should see the amount and variety of lists I have for Warmachine on my War Room App.

But...

If I had to choose... maybe Warmachine. But only because its the most recent of the first to games mentioned that I've played... don't know a dang thing about DZC though... sorry.

The PP website seems to be lacking in information about how to start. Could you give me some basics?

The Warmachine and Hordes Quick-Start rulebooks are free to download.

As is the Infinity rules.

Captain Killhammer McFighterson stared down at the surface of Earth from his high vantage point on the bridge of Starship Facemelter. Something ominous was looming on the surface. He could see a great shadow looming just underneath the waters of the Gulf of Mexico, slowly spreading northward. "That can't be good..." he muttered to himself while rubbing the super manly stubble on his chin with one hand. "But... on the other hand..." he looked at his shiny new bionic murder-arm. "This could be the perfect chance for that promotion." A perfect roundhouse kick slammed the ship's throttle into full gear. Soon orange jets of superheated plasma were visible from the space-windshield as Facemelter reentered the atmosphere at breakneck speed.

All the games you list are good options. You can help us recommend a good game by letting us know:

1) What scale game's interest you (6mm, 10mm, 15mm, 28mm, etc)

2) What scope of game interest you? Small warbands, Platoon size (20-40 figs per side), Company ( A couple platoons per side). Battalion, etc…

3) How important is it to you to be able to find opponents?

4) What genres and aesthetics interest you the most. Grimdark, steampunk fantasy, anime, hard sci-fi?

1. 28mm
2. Small to Platoon size
3. I have a friend willing to try anything, so not extremely important
4. Steampunk or Sci-fi

I'd recommend Warmachine or Infinity. Both match the criteria you listed above.

As to the other criteria in your first post:

-Both are going to give you a very good and balanced (as compared to 40k) play experience. Infinity might have a slight edge there in that Warmachine can seem imbalanced if you don't have the right combination of units, but both rulesets are known to be very tightly written and the new version of Infinity should clear up some of the previous translation issues.

-Both have a well developed background, though Warmachine has the edge in that the "Iron Kingdoms" have quite a bit of RPG background material if you like to delve into the setting.

Best of luck whatever you decide.

DZC is also interesting. The 10mm scale makes it much cheaper, it seems to have the most comprehensive starter set available, and I've heard the rules are good.

The starter set with it's plastic minis is an excellent deal, but beyond that when you look at building up your forces, the minis aren't much cheaper than most games and more expensive than many. You're paying less per mini, but you're fielding quite alot of them and the larger vehicles can get fairly pricey.

Still, if you want to get into small scale miniature gaming, it's a good option and their figures and customer service are said to be top notch.

Absolutely. Give Dropzone a go! Starter is the best starter for any game I've seen, hands down.

I recommend you go with Dropzone Commander, the are going to release the new plastic starters at better price.

Wild West Exodus. The models are beautiful, relatively free of defect in the resin characters, & the starter set is technically a complete game. You can purchase you if you want or buy other factions but it's not needed. Also, the game scales well from a dust up in the streets of a ghost town all the way up to huge weapons of war the lies of which even the Wild Wild West never dreamt. Think deadlands in tabletop form. It's got your sci-fi (the Watchers are aliens), it's got your steampunk, & it's American west to boot. I love it, just wish more people round here would play it.
